Still Confused What is Warframe? Hollywood Legend Werner Herzog is Here to Fix That

So that’s what it is…

After more than a decade of mind-bending lore, space-ninja acrobatics, and ever-evolving quests, Warframe is still one of gaming’s most fascinating (and often bewildering) universes. But if you’ve ever struggled to explain what Warframe actually is, Digital Extremes just delivered the most unexpected solution: Werner Herzog.

At The Game Awards 2025, on December 11, Digital Extremes unveiled two new trailers highlighting major updates for Warframe and its sister title, Soulframe. However, the standout moment belonged to Herzog, yes, the legendary filmmaker and actor, who appears as a live-action embodiment of “The Indifference,” a mysterious force woven into Warframe’s far-future sci-fi narrative.

Herzog’s haunting delivery and signature introspective gravitas set the tone for the game’s newest chapter, The Old Peace, which launched on December 10 and is available for free on all platforms.

Now, it’s not clear whether Werner Herzog really is the voice actor for The Indifference in Warframe (which is the game’s current big bag evil guy), but players are stoked at the possibility nonetheless. The Indifference, for the record, is a cosmic entity that takes a humanoid form in the game, likely out of curiosity, and mostly speaks a cryptic language in-game.

Of course, the Warframe presentation wasn’t complete without a speech from the devs themselves. “The Game Awards is a special night, and it’s inspiring to see different industries come together to celebrate the craft of game making,” according to Rebecca Ford, Warframe Creative Director.

“That’s exactly why our partnership with Werner Herzog was so perfect for this trailer. He brought a totally fresh perspective to Warframe, embracing its strange beauty and human core. This collaboration allowed us to see our own world we created through different eyes, and we have never been more sure of Warframe’s future for 2026 and beyond,” Ford added.

To end her speech, Ford expressed gratitude toward Warframe’s committed fanbase, “Thank you to everyone who helped us survive for more than 12 years. We look forward to continuing to be weird and doing things our own way to serve our communities across every medium we can.”

So far, Warframe is currently enjoying one of its popularity peaks as the concurrent player count on Steam has spiked recently, thanks to The Old Peace update, and all that happened before Werner Herzog was there to explain what the game was all about.
