Imagine going to Walmart to pick up groceries and suddenly coming face-to-face with a mouse that’s very much alive. That’s exactly what happened to a woman in Washington, DC, and she was understandably horrified. The woman, who said she works for Instacart, was shopping at a Walmart when another visibly shaken shopper stopped her. The shopper asked her to check whether what she was seeing was real. When she did, the woman discovered a live mouse inside a bag of bread. In the video she later shared, she can be seen carefully gripping the bag with just her fingertips as she films the mouse trapped inside. At one point, the animal even appeared to blink at her. The woman summed up her disbelief in the caption, writing, “It was alive too, then had the nerve to blink.”
In another video, the woman from Washington, DC, shared additional context about what happened next. After she and the other shopper confirmed that there was a live mouse inside the bread, they went to find a store employee. She explained that she immediately felt the entire bakery section should be considered contaminated. When they finally located a team lead, however, he reportedly removed only the single product from the bottom shelf. In her view, that response fell short of what should have been done. Later, the woman was able to contact the manager responsible for the entire bread section at Walmart. He asked her to send over the video of the mouse, which she did. According to the woman, the manager reassured her that there is an established protocol for situations like this, which includes removing all affected products and fully sanitizing the area.
She later posted another video showing her immediate reaction after discovering the mouse. In the clip, the shopper who first alerted her explains that she only noticed something was wrong when she tried to grab the bag herself. The Instacart worker then picked up the bread again, and this time the mouse’s tail was clearly visible through the packaging. Moments later, the mouse escaped from the bag entirely, meaning it was still loose somewhere inside the store. Yikes.
People Reacting to the Washington DC Woman Finding a Mouse at Walmart
Viewers were just as disgusted as the woman in Washington, DC after seeing a mouse inside a loaf of bread. Many commenters immediately jumped to legal advice, insisting she should have purchased the product and taken action afterward. “Would’ve bought it then sued,” one person wrote. Others strongly agreed. “Me too, I would purchase it went home waited 2 days and baby sued .. now I see why they say the younger generation have no critical thinking skills.. they just post to social media she could’ve been rich‼” another commenter claimed. Not everyone was convinced there was a case, though. One person pushed back, explaining, “Actually, you can’t really sue if you weren’t physically hurt or got sick. Since you didn’t eat it, the most a court or store would do is give you a refund or a new loaf of mouse free bread. It’s gross for sure, but there’s no ‘damage’ to pay out for.”
Some comments under the video took an unexpected turn, with viewers even expressing sympathy for the mouse. “Not to be overly empathetic but it’s probably so scared and confused too,” one person wrote. That sentiment resonated with others, prompting a reply that read, “That’s normal empathy you feel btw. Most humans just lack it because we’ve been conditioned to be cruel. You are normally empathetic.”
Others used the moment to offer practical advice. One commenter warned, “They chew thru the bags. If you ever come across bread and chips that have holes in the bag don’t ever buy it. This is why it’s sooooo important to wash your canned goods, fruits and veggies.”
With the mouse ultimately escaping the packaging, many viewers hoped store employees would be able to locate it before it caused further issues inside the store.
