You might think that ICE agents as a whole just hate everything related to immigrants. However, that would be a false assumption. Aside from the fact that there are, shockingly, quite a lot of people of color hired as ICE agents, these people also seem to have no shame eating at restaurants run by the very same communities they love to target. Recently, some ICE agents were shamed and kicked out of a Mexican restaurant in Minnesota.
In the video, a white car was surrounded by an angry crowd, with the sound of loud whistles blaring behind it. A Minnesota man was seen grabbing the hat of an ICE agent who was about to enter his car after being kicked out of the restaurant. As usual, the ICE agent was wearing a face covering that hid the bottom half of his face. The Minnesota man then kicked the hat away after it fell to the ground. When the ICE agent tried to pick it up, the man got to it first and threw it even farther away.
It seemed that the ICE agent did not want to escalate the situation further or deal with the already angry crowd, so he chose not to retaliate and instead went back to retrieve his hat again. Insults were thrown at the ICE agents as they entered their car and finally left, surrounded by an angry crowd of Minnesota residents.
Online, the internet applauded the Minnesota people for kicking out the ICE agents. Many found it inappropriate and unacceptable that ICE agents would try to enter and eat at a Mexican restaurant while actively targeting immigrants. “NO TACOS FOR YOU!” one user wrote. Another said, “They want to deport all the Mexicans and still eat Mexican food too.”
Others remarked that they hoped people in other states, not just Minnesota, would also treat ICE agents similarly. “I hope this follows them everywhere they go. That thing in Willmar, where they were at a restaurant and then detained the workers, is like a biblical parable of evil-minded people taking advantage of others’ hospitality and goodwill,” one commenter wrote.
Another user said that they actually knew the location the ICE agents had visited. “I know that place well. They have been keeping the door locked, with someone standing by to unlock it when they know who it is. Fantastic food, always served with a neighborly smile,” the user said.
Some users were more curious about how the Minnesota residents were even able to identify the ICE agents in the first place. Unless the agents were openly stating that they were ICE, it seems difficult to know whether someone is an ICE agent or not. “How were they identified, out of curiosity? I saw another video of some guys in Hudson who identified another off-duty agent. The guy looked absolutely terrified,” one user said.
