Celebrities tend to be the type to keep silent when it comes to political issues. After all, picking a side might ruffle some feathers, and there is no doubt that they could lose fans for taking a stand. However, while there are still plenty of people who have remained silent, more and more public figures have begun speaking out about what happened in Minnesota. Recently, Peter Dinklage was recorded reciting a poem for Renee Good in front of The Public Theater in New York. Standing atop a small stage and holding a microphone, Dinklage explained that the poem was written by Amanda Gorman and titled “For Renee Nicole Good.”
It was a poem created specifically for the woman who was shot by ICE agents in Minnesota. Now, in New York, Dinklage wanted to commemorate her and ensure that her name was not forgotten. The audience remained silent as the actor recited the poem, listening closely to every word. Once he finished speaking, applause and cheers quickly followed.
Dinklage was not the only celebrity showing dissatisfaction with what has been happening in America. While no one else has yet stood on a stage in New York to recite a poem like Peter Dinklage did, other celebrities have expressed criticism in their own ways. For instance, aside from posting on social media and calling out fellow celebrities to speak up, Billie Eilish was also seen wearing an “ICE Out” pin on her outfit. She even mentioned the topic during her Grammys acceptance speech, drawing attention to the issue on one of the biggest stages in entertainment.
Many people online were happy that these celebrities were actually using their voices to speak out against ICE agents. Peter Dinklage, in particular, received praise for reciting the poem in New York. “For playing such convincing villains, it’s hard not to like the guy. Peter’s a good dude,” one commenter wrote. Another said, “Peter has always been so intentional with how he uses his platform. This is heartbreaking, but it’s so important that her name is being kept alive like this. ICE is a stain on this country, period.”
Others hoped that what Dinklage did in New York was only the beginning, and that more celebrities would take a stronger stance against ICE. “He’s a good dude, but now I want more celebs speaking out. (From a Minnesotan) ❤️,” one user said.
Of course, not everyone was happy with Peter Dinklage or his decision to do this in New York. Some people were still upset over the controversy surrounding him and the Snow White remake. “Peter Dinklage is self-righteous and took away many dwarf’s opportunity to get their foot in the door of Hollywood. He pulled up the ladder. [Expletive] Peter Dinklage,” one user wrote.
