In a move that has everyone in the political spectrum riled up, New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that, thanks to a novel executive order, ICE agents will require a judicial warrant to enter any state building.

Mayor Mamdani Hosts Annual Interfaith Breakfast

Mamdani spoke at the New York Public Library during his first annual Interfaith Breakfast. He denounced ICE actions across the country, labeling the federal law enforcement agents as people who “violate the Constitution and visit terror upon our neighbors.”

The New York City mayor remembered Renée Good and Alex Pretti, both killed by ICE agents in Minneapolis, and spoke positively about immigration, quoting the Bible and the Prophet Muhammad. In the middle of his address, he shared the news of Executive Order 13:

“That is why this morning, right here in this moment, I shall sign an executive order that will uphold our city’s protection not just of our fellow immigrant New Yorkers, but of all New Yorkers, from abusive immigration enforcement,” Mamdani said before he signed the order.

According to ABC7, Executive Order 13 prohibits ICE from entering into New York City property without a judicial warrant, enhances privacy protections to prevent the federal government from unlawfully accessing New Yorkers’ private data, orders a public safety audit report for law compliance, and creates an interagency committee.

Mixed Reactions To Executive Order

Everyone in attendance applauded Mayor Mamdani, celebrating his efforts to push back against ICE in his city. Users online also celebrated the new executive order, celebrating amid nonstop controversies involving the federal law enforcement agency.

“This is how you fight back, Mayors!” one user said. Another one commented, “Man, I wish this guy could be president.” A third one added, “Wow. See how simple that is, instead of all the chaos and bloodshed?“

However, many pointed out that what Mamdani announced was already law in New York City. Others mocked his announcement, calling it performative, knowing that there’s little he could do against federal law.

“He’s just pandering to his base… Wait and see, they are going to do a recall on him,” one user said. Another one asked, “Why don’t you worry about picking up the trash in your streets and clearing the snow?“
