For the past few weeks, we have been hearing rumours that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 would feature some kind of battle royal mode. And now we can stop speculating, as those rumours have been confirmed. Forbes reports the mode is named “Blackout” and it will replace the single-player campaign as one of the “three pillars” of Black Ops.
Developer, Treyarch didn’t have a lot of details to share. They did reveal the mode will include land, sea and air vehicles on huge maps. The mode will have content spanning multiple games and heroes, from across Black Ops and Zombies. The map will be 1500 times bigger than Nuketown. I’m not a Call of Duty player myself, but I understand that is going to be very large.
It will be interesting to see how this fits into the current landscape of battle royal-themed games. Call of Duty has a gigantic fanbase, so it’s sure to be a success, but how it stacks up next to genre giants like Fortnite and PUBG is something we will have to wait to see. The inclusion of Sea and, Air vehicles could add a lot of variety and a unique feel to this mode, as well as Call of Duty’s tried and true shooting mechanics.
Franchise rival Battlefield is also rumoured to include some kind of battle royal mode in its next entry, Battlefield V. If this rumour turns out to be true it will be a new chapter in the competition between these two AAA first-person shooter franchises. We will provide new details on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and its Blackout mode as they become available.
