When news spread online that a five-year-old child had been detained by ICE, many Americans and people in other countries reacted with outrage. Countless individuals demanded his release, and after significant public pressure, he was eventually let go. However, Liam Ramos is not the only child being held in custody. Congressman Joaquin Castro recently revealed that a two-month-old baby is also being kept inside a Texas ICE facility, which he discovered during a congressional visit to the detention center.
During an interview with journalist LidiaTerrazasNews, he described what he witnessed inside the facility. He explained that he learned about the baby while speaking with children being held at the Texas ICE center. When he asked who the youngest detainee was, he was told there was a two-month-old infant. He said he tried to reassure the children that their situation was not their fault and that many people were working to help them leave the facility. He also expressed concern about the long-term effects detention conditions could have on a baby that young.
The two-month-old wasn’t the only child there, as the congressman also shared that he interacted with other kids. One girl said that she and her parents got detained after they brought her to Disney World, and now she blamed herself for what happened. Other kids were also not faring well. The congressman said that they were either stone-faced due to trauma or crying in distress inside the Texas ICE facility.
It wasn’t just the congressman who was distraught about what was happening inside the Texas ICE facility. Countless internet users were expressing their outrage and disgust about what was happening in America. “Disgusting, makes you want to say things on the internet that will get the FBI at your door,” one user said.
Others wondered why the people who were still supporting Trump and ICE could continue to believe that the people detained were actual criminals and not innocent individuals. “I threw up. This is vile, cruel, and designed to inflict maximum suffering on all those that were abducted and captured. There is no reforming this. Let’s call it what it is: a concentration or internment camp,” one Redditor wrote.
Some remarked that it was deeply ironic that many of those who support ICE come from the political right, where conservatives have often identified as pro-life, yet they appeared comfortable with children being held inside Texas ICE facilities. “Our government is trafficking humans of any age and background. This is internment at this point. The horrible agreement of private profit imprisonment that marries ethnic cleansing with voter suppression,” one commenter said.
