ICE agents are sort of like a hunting dog that refuses to let go of their target, regardless of what kind of damage they cause. Aside from breaking into people’s homes without a warrant or ambushing them on the street, in rare cases, you could even see them involved in a wild car chase trying to hunt down their target. Not too long ago, one such ICE car chase occurred in front of a cafe called Nina’s Coffee in St. Paul, Minnesota.
It wasn’t just two cars crashing; there were actually three of them. One man and one woman were sent to the hospital after receiving injuries due to the crash. Passersby who were nearby said that they saw an ICE agent in an unmarked sedan chasing after a Minnesota man driving a red Prius.
As the red car passed through the intersection, it spun out of control and crashed into two cars. Shockingly, the man driving the red car somehow was still able to exit his car and tried to escape on foot. The ICE agent immediately gave chase and caught the Minnesota man. According to witnesses, the man driving the red car appeared to be either Arab or Latino. A huge crowd soon formed at the scene of the incident.
Internet users who heard the news found the whole thing ridiculous. Many remarked that ICE agents engaging in a car chase was just pure recklessness and dangerous. “There’s a reason we don’t do chases. Any random pedestrian could’ve been hurt or killed as a direct result of ICE pretending they are in an action movie,” one user said.
Some users even argued that the ICE agent who chased after the Minnesota man should receive punishment for causing the crash in the first place. Others defended the fleeing man, saying that it was understandable that he fled the moment he saw an ICE agent was after him. “This is what happens when you promise total immunity to heavily armed and poorly trained thugs. Lock them up!” one user said. Another wrote, “Also, you can’t really blame someone for running from ICE if they cannot be sure they’ll receive due process or even basic medical care or safety.”
A handful of users expressed concerns should more similar car chases between ICE agents and their targets occur in Minnesota. “They just do not care about Minnesotans standing on sidewalks or driving on the road. They are a danger to our state. ICE has been working with Minnesota for years to detain people with existing deportation orders. Not once did their operations require high-speed chases or bashing into cars,” one Redditor said.
