A chaotic scene unfolded at Bay Plaza Mall in the Bronx after hundreds of teenagers reportedly showed up for a planned “takeover” that had been circulating on social media, leaving shoppers, workers, and security scrambling to regain control. Videos taken on Monday afternoon show large groups of teens crowding different areas around the New York mall, including a nearby Chipotle Mexican Grill, where some of them climbed onto tables, danced, and even jumped off while employees tried to stop more from pushing their way inside.
Another clip captured the moment mall security attempted to manage the swelling crowd near one of the entrances. Several teens were seen getting into a scuffle with guards as they resisted being pushed out of the establishment.
According to CBS News, more than 300 teens were involved in the gathering, and at least 18 were eventually taken into custody by police as authorities moved in to disperse the crowd and restore order to the area.
Public Outrage Builds Over New York Mall Takeover
While some of the teens appeared to treat the moment like harmless fun, many residents were far from amused, saying the behavior could have serious consequences for businesses and the community. One woman, who voiced her frustration in a video on TikTok, warned that incidents like this only reinforce negative stereotypes about the Bronx and could push businesses to reconsider staying in the area.
She argued that Bay Plaza is one of the few major malls serving the borough and that repeated disruptions could ultimately drive stores away and cost people their jobs. She also pointed out that employees are often the ones most affected when stores are forced to close early due to disturbances, noting that lost hours can mean smaller paychecks for workers who rely on those shifts to support their families.
Her message struck a chord with many netizens who said the spectacle went beyond typical teenage mischief. Some viewers agreed that incidents like this only fuel harmful profiling and stigma. “This is why they put us down and profile the black and Hispanic community! 🤦🏻♀️,” one comment read.
Others criticized the teens for turning the mall into a scene of chaos instead of a safe place for families and workers. “The fact yall thought this was cute,” one person remarked.
