There are always two sides to every story, and the one you believe forms your perspective on a matter. A woman claimed that there was some form of discrimination against those who voted at the Republican booth at City Hall, Austin, Texas.Â
“Guess what just happened?” the woman began in a TikTok video. “So apparently, if you’re going to vote in City Hall in Austin, Texas, you are not allowed to get information about the Republican convention,” she continued. The woman included clips she took inside and outside City Hall; inside, where a woman had told her she was not allowed to take photos, and outside, where she showed a man who had voted Democrat and had a paper with the information about his convention, she noted that theirs was a QR code, which she was prevented from scanning twice. As she made the video outside City Hall, a security guard approached her to tell her that she couldn’t record, “which was absolutely ridiculous,” she noted.Â
“Don’t let them take your voice; continue to push forward. You will make a difference,” one TikToker wrote in the comments, cheering her on. “ This is straight-up ELECTION INTERFERENCE and voter suppression in broad daylight! Democrats in Austin can’t even pretend to be neutral anymore,” another user stated.Â
“You are not the only one. I voted Republican, and I got treated differently!! Like what!??” one user wrote. “This needs to be reported,” another said. “That’s a public area where you are absolutely allowed to take pictures… wasn’t a restricted area,” a TikToker noted. “I am a poll worker in another state. They are breaking the law. You have to be fair for both sides, unbiased,” another added. One user asked, “Is this not some type of constitutional violation? I’d imagine you would be able to sue.”
However, on the other hand, some users saw the other side of the story and were not letting it slide. “The Travis County Republican Party is responsible for providing any supplementary election documents besides the ballot. If they didn’t provide them, that’s on them. You don’t have to always pretend to be a victim,” one stated. “Except that’s not true. The Republican representative has every opportunity to pass out their info. It’s their responsibility,” another noted. Someone even took a jab at the entire Right Wing, writing, “Republicans are well known for being uneducated dorks, so there is probably another designated table area to obtain the propaganda she is seeking.”
A netizen said, “She clearly doesn’t understand that the organizers for the Democrat convention are different than the ones for the Republican convention… and chose to run them differently.” A last one noted, “This isn’t news. She voted perfectly normally, like anyone else. She wasn’t suppressed or blocked from voting. This is a huge nothing burger. She did what she came there to do, vote.”Â
