Sometimes, you have no choice but to put yourself and your healing first. This is what one Texas woman found when she was diagnosed with kidney disease in her teens. Being dealt that kind of hand is not easy to overcome. Every day, she shows that she’s putting her best foot forward, despite it all. Now, this woman is speaking up because a hospital worker looked down on her for her choices.
Destiny (@destiny.roer) is like many Americans living with kidney disease, taking it day by day. As she overcomes the health problems she’s been dealt, she never thought that somebody would make her feel bad about how she chooses to live her life. Unfortunately, after a recent surgery, she was judged by a hospital tech. You would think anyone working with her knows Destiny has enough on her plate.
In a TikTok video, Destiny said that she had surgery and a kidney tube placement the day before. She was approached by a hospital tech, who asked if she was still in school. Destiny told her she graduated from high school very recently. The hospital tech then asked, “Are you going to college?” Destiny replied with, “Not right now” because it’s very obvious she has so much on her plate. The tech scoffed and said, “Why?” Destiny explained to the tech that she was supposed to start college three different times. However, she missed her chance each time because she had to have emergency surgery for her kidneys.
For a young teen to be dealt such a hand and still have so much drive speaks wonders. She even explains that she had a scholarship to a college near home. However, she had repeated surgeries that year and wasn’t able to attend. She was basically sabotaged every time she tried to start, and it’s incredibly unfair. But what’s just as unfair is being treated poorly after going through such a difficult thing. Nobody should be looked down on for taking their time to pursue their dreams. To make matters worse, Destiny said the tech asked her what she wanted to do with life, and Destiny said, “ironically, pediatric nursing.” The tech asked, “How is that ironic? Everybody ends up in the hospital at least once in their life.”
One commenter agreed with Destiny, “Even if a person is perfectly healthy, judging them for not going to college is SO weird.” Another commenter shared, “Mind you she’s literally looking at your chart, she knows you have health complications that might make college difficult. Always prioritize your wellbeing!” Here’s to hoping that Destiny gets to follow these dreams in the time frame that works for her.
