A woman in Michigan was vlogging her visit to a Goodwill, showing her audience some of the clothes she found. However, as seen in her clip, a man suddenly interrupts her, saying she was “way too skinny.” As a result, she confronted him in a viral interaction, deciding to show class rather than full-on anger.
TikToker Haley Owen shared her experience at the Michigan Goodwill. She creates content around vintage fashion, thrifting, and crafts, and her clip was supposed to feature her showing clothes she found at the store. However, it went viral thanks to the random interaction, garnering 4.2 million views, close to 600,000 likes, and 4,000 comments.
The Michigan woman’s video started with her showing some of the items at the Goodwill. She showed shoes, jackets, shirts, shorts, bags, home decor, and even a picture frame. However, at one point in the clip, she notices someone staring at her, suggesting that people had issues with her recording in public.
Moments later, the random comment occurred.
“I just gotta say, you’re way too skinny,” the man is heard saying off camera, followed by laughter.
The Michigan woman is seen laughing awkwardly, and then she said, “Thanks.” She tried to continue recording her clip but had to stop it as she was visibly upset.
“I’m way too skinny, guys. Did you hear that?” Haley said. “Way too skinny. Said by a fat man.”
Confrontation, Reactions
The clip ended shortly after, but she wrote in its description that she had actually confronted him. A day later, she posted a video of the confrontation, in which she is seen telling the man that he “can’t go around saying that to people.” The man, whose face was not shown in the clip, apologized to her.
“Why would you tell me I’m too skinny?” Haley asked him, who then said he was joking. “Those jokes are not funny, especially for people with eating disorders. […] That’s not a nice thing to say to people.”
The confrontation continued, and, according to Haley, the man’s wife worked at Goodwill. The clip even shows the woman agreeing with Haley about the man’s comment being inappropriate.
Both clips sparked a considerable reaction.
Some people applauded how Haley handled the situation, with one user saying, “I love how you gentle parented him.” Others also congratulated the wife for her reaction, with one writing, “Glad his wife agreed and was on your side.”
Some users, however, bashed the Michigan woman instead, arguing that calling the man “fat” was equally rude. One user commented, “Let’s not continue the cycle of hate girl,” while another one added, “I don’t like how you edited out the full interaction.”
While criticism was present, the vast majority of users were supportive of Haley, seemingly empathizing with her in a situation many would find aggravating. This, of course, led to both clips blowing up online and drawing significant engagement.
Haley continued to post her content after the “way too skinny” incident, and even recently posted another visit to Goodwill.
