New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani is getting criticized on X for his new childcare initiative for city workers, which he says will be fully free. He made the announcement at a construction site in New York, and the video is now gaining attention, with many arguing that the plan will come at the expense of taxpayers.

🚨BREAKING: Socialist Mayor of NYC, Mamdani, announces a free, in reality taxpayer-funded childcare center for government workers: “We never want city workers to have to choose between a job they love and raising their kids in the city they call home.” pic.twitter.com/MkeFk4xYCB

In his statement, Mamdani described the project as an upcoming childcare center that will serve municipal employees. He said the location, which is still under construction, will be transformed this fall into “New York City’s first ever on-site childcare program” for city workers.

The mayor added that the center will provide full-day care for children between six weeks and three years old. He also stated that applications will open on April 30 and will be available to employees working in the David Dinkins building, as well as DCAS employees across the city. “This will be managed in-house by DCAS and operated by a contracted child care provider that we will be announcing later this spring. Now, this is a building of over a million square feet of office space and more than 2,000 city employees from over a dozen agencies,” he announced.

Public Reaction to Mamdani’s Free Childcare Plan

People are mainly debating the implications of the plan. One critic said, “Yay! More Learing Centers to steal our tax dollars!” Another added, “Free really means taxing the middle class more.”

Some responses were more direct in their criticism of the mayor. “LOL this is so pathetic @NYCMayor you’re digging yourself into an early grave,” one comment read. Others pointed to the broader financial impact, with one user writing, “Some of the New Yorkers who voted for Mamdani will be paying the bill for this.”

Another commenter framed the initiative as a financial benefit for government employees, stating, “Essentially, taxpayers gave city ‘workers’ another raise.”

However, not all reactions were negative. Some users supported the move, arguing it addresses a real need for working families. “Mamdani’s spot on—NYC city workers finally get childcare support to raise kids at home without tough choices! Real win!” one person wrote.

Mamdani, in defending the initiative, said the goal is to ensure city employees are not forced to choose between keeping a job they value and raising their children in the city they call home.
