A Black dentist from a small town in Illinois has recently entered the spotlight after speaking out against racist patients in a viral video. Her reaction was supported by many viewers, who said they were also tired of seeing racist attitudes in the workplace.
The video was recorded by the woman and originally shared on her Instagram profile. From there, the story went viral and was eventually reposted on Reddit’s r/BlackPeopleofReddit, where it gained over 1,200 upvotes along with widespread support.
In the footage, a Black dentist can be seen speaking with the clinic’s employees. She says it has come to her attention that multiple patients have used racial slurs or said the “clinic is too Black,” and that such statements will not be tolerated. The woman then adds that she will no longer see patients identified as making racist comments and that they are no longer welcome there.
Internet Criticizes Racist People at Illinois Clinic
People on r/BlackPeopleofReddit largely supported the dentist’s decision, saying that “ungrateful, racist people don’t deserve to be treated.” Others commented, “Good for her and her team. This era of politically emboldened and overt racism, while not new, will require a new version of us to deal with it. Call it out, set your terms, stand your ground.”
The woman was also praised for standing up for her employees, something some people feel does not happen nearly often enough: “To those business owners who have employees who are racial minorities: standing up for your employees is the best way to build loyalty.”
Some folks also shared their own stories with racism at the workplace: “Working in mental health. Almost every day, I hear someone being called the N-word.” One seemingly angry user also noted, “People actually say that there’s no racism in this day and age? That’s not dismissive, that’s straight-up evil.”
Racism against Black people remains all too common in the United States, including in the workplace. This likely explains why the video drew such a strong reaction, as many are weary of seeing this pattern repeat and were encouraged to see someone in a position of authority speak out.
