A woman in Dallas, Texas, vowed never to use Lyft again after sharing her experience with one of their drivers. According to her, the driver took off out of the blue while they were discussing seating. The incident didn’t stop there: the driver allegedly filed a false report, which led to the woman being blocked from using the app.

I hate being this vulnerable, but I had to address this… @Lyft this is unacceptable. UPDATE: The day after this post went live a rep at Lyft reached out to me and looked into this situation. They informed me that the driver, Tarik, made a false report claiming that I was underage and that is the reason why I could no longer request rides, or even use the app at all. In no instance was she right in this situation and for me, this confirms it even more. Although I may not ever use the app again, I appreciate that they finally did something, even though I wish it were sooner. And I hope that they better the way they handle these situations; drop the AI support, invest in hiring people, and train them for the better. Even with the false report, my ID is verified on my account. A human would have seen that. I really do appreciate all of you that have been so supportive and also sharing your stories 🫶🏽 because without it, I would have never known.

Bree Stephens shared her Lyft story on TikTok. Her regular content focuses on movie recommendations, and she describes herself as a storyteller. This clip, however, stood out thanks to its virality. It garnered 1.2 million views, 102,700 likes, and 1,500 comments.

The Texas woman detailed that she had gone out with friends to a local karaoke bar. Following the meet-up, she requested a six-seat Lyft for her and her friends. However, when the driver arrived, she said she could only fit four. Bree, confused, counted how many seats they were going to need, and it turns out she only needed four.

She attempted to explain this to the driver, saying that she had initially requested an SUV that fit six people, but she was willing to accept the ride regardless. However, according to her, the Lyft driver cut her off mid-sentence, said, “Okay, that’s fine,” and took off with her door still open.

Immediately, Bree contacted Lyft’s customer support. They issued a refund and apologized, eventually agreeing to give a 1-star rating to the driver and making sure Bree was never to be matched with her again.

The Texas woman revealed that, after arriving home, she found that she had been logged out of the Lyft app. Then, after logging back in, she was unable to order any rides or access customer support again.

In an update on her clip’s description, she detailed that Lyft had contacted her and said that the driver had allegedly filed a false report claiming Bree was underage. This, she said, would explain why she couldn’t use the app anymore.

“It is just disgusting how this person treated me, and it’s disgusting how they treated me on this app,” Bree said.

Lyft Incident Sparks Outrage

The video sparked multiple responses. Some were outraged by how the driver and Lyft acted. One user said, “Lyft not responding in comments says it all.” Another one even shared a story of her own, writing, “My Lyft driver stopped to get gas during mid-ride. I was late to work.”

A group of viewers, meanwhile, thought Bree was overreacting. One commenter said, “This is really not that big of a deal.” Another one even defended the Lyft driver, writing, “Drivers have the right to cancel rides for whatever reason.” These responses were then criticized by other users, calling them out for refusing to understand Bree’s situation.

The Texas woman’s clip’s virality is not a mystery. Videos such as hers tend to spark backlash, which is exactly what happened to both her and Lyft’s accounts. The back and forth in the comments between critics and supporters also contributed to the clip’s high engagement, garnering more views as a result.

While Bree appreciated Lyft’s response, she will most likely never use the ridesharing service again.
