Residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York, decided to stand up for one of their members against the NYPD during an alleged illegal eviction. A TikTok video from the scene showed numerous law enforcement officers and community members around the house. Surrounded by officers, someone could be seen changing the locks to the house, and then another person brought in boards to barricade the house. At some point, some members of the community got into a physical scuffle with some officers, leading to arrests. However, the community did not back down.
After what seemed like a lot of back-and-forth between both parties, towards the end of the video, a swarm of officers was seen departing the building as they got into their cars and left. One of the community members who was seen engaging with the officers noted that they came in trying to change the locks, but the community stopped them. The caption of the video noted that the homeowner is a Person of Color and that the officers, consisting of the City Marshal and NYPD, failed in their attempts and had to leave because they had “too many witnesses to their crimes.”
Internet Takes Sides In Alleged Illegal Eviction Standoff
Just like the residents of the community, the digital community stood in solidarity, expressing moral outrage and pointing out the legal deficits of the current housing policies. One observer characterized the incident as a defining systemic failure: “It’s one of the greatest crimes of our era. I have seen many victims and been a victim of this. It’s awful! I wish we could do more to stop this!” Another pointed out the perceived hypocrisy in how law enforcement prioritizes interventions in housing disputes, saying they refuse to evict squatters but remove legitimate homeowners.
An individual blamed elected officials nationwide for delaying taking what they perceived as a simple act to resolve such issues. Another expressed pure disbelief that such property seizures were legally possible in the first place. Some users celebrated the residents’ solidarity. “Thank you for looking out for one another. I love this. New York City sure does have heart and loyalty,” one wrote, and another wished them a long time of stability going forward. One TikToker put the issue under the racial lens, calling out those who help facilitate these controversial evictions: “And the well-paid class traitors assist in perpetrating the injustice.” A last user noted that the transition towards digital recording of deeds was a major issue, making it possible for someone to steal a property title.
In conclusion, this event points out what could be achieved if communities unite and stand together for one another.
