It would seem that the turbulent times Florida has been living through lately are about to get even more turbulent, especially since several changes across the state are not well-received by some people. One of these changes pertains to the state’s education system, more specifically, one course that used to be part of all public colleges. In this case, we’re referring to Sociology, which will no longer be part of the General Education courses, as the State’s Board of Education has voted to remove it from its degree requirements.
The shocking news comes from an article in the Central Florida Times on Substack, which claims that the State’s Board of Education has voted to remove Sociology from General Education courses. It would seem that between this year and next, all colleges that offer this course are required to phase it out until it becomes an elective, not a required course for a degree.
According to the article, this decision is due to sociology leaning more toward “ideological indoctrination.” Now, while Sociology courses were already removed from certain requirements at public universities, this latest removal has now expanded to the 28 colleges across the state, leaving many angry and disappointed, as many believe this is yet another anti-DEI initiative by the current government.
Florida Residents Disappointed at the Sociology Changes in General Education
While people can still opt to take the course, it was shocking for many to learn that it will no longer be a degree requirement, with several residents questioning the decision, as they believe Sociology is something everyone in General Education should study.
“As a sociology minor, I find this highly disappointing.”
“Bit by bit, piece by piece, they are making sure that in the future, Floridians won’t have the capacity to THINK. This is what they really and truly want: A populace who just does as it’s told.”
Several other Redditors started blaming Governor DeSantis and the Republicans, claiming this is another questionable choice among the many that the political party has made lately.
“A society that understands its own mechanics is much better suited to solve problems like poverty, discrimination, and health crises. Of course, these issues are of no interest to DeSantis and Florida Republicans.“
In the end, it seems some people are extremely shocked after learning about this, while others saw it coming since the March 2026 changes.
