We all know that the gubernatorial race is the breeding ground for some weird topics, questionable choices, and most of all, things that tend to fire back at those running for governor. Well, in this case, we’re referring to none other than Steve Hilton, who is running for governor in California. Recently, he posted a video of himself eating a street taco in Barstow, but instead of helping his campaign somehow, he suffered backlash, as several Redditors criticized him for eating at a Del Taco establishment.
While KTLA reported this on its website, the original video comes from Hilton’s Instagram page, where he filmed himself eating a taco at Barstow, California. In the clip, he talks about being in Barstow, the hometown of Gloria Romero, who is currently running for Lieutenant Governor, then shifts focus to his street taco bought at “an iconic historical location,” referring to the Del Taco establishment.
He talks about this establishment being the original one from this fast food chain, and says how he’s off to enjoy his street taco. Now, while this could have been a good clip of him trying to promote this meal or brand, or both, it somehow backfired, as several people across Instagram and Reddit started criticizing Hilton.
Many people claimed that the tacos at Del Taco aren’t even considered street tacos, and that he shouldn’t have put those two things together in one sentence. And well, this was just a small critique because some other Redditors weren’t too friendly toward the candidate.
Redditors Criticize Hilton After Showing Off His ‘Street Taco’
The real backlash came after Hilton categorized the food from Del Taco as street tacos, which, in the eyes of many, aren’t.
“He insulted both street tacos and Del Taco… You don’t go to Del Taco when you want tacos, you go when you want Del Tacos.“
“THIS is what MAGA thinks is a good choice?“
Others, however, took it further and claimed that Hilton shouldn’t be talking about food in California, especially since he wasn’t born in the state.
“Guy isn’t a Californian. Full stop.“
“If you’re running for California Governor eating Del Taco this immediately tells me Hilton is so fake. Real Californians eat tacos at the Mission.“
Some other Redditors noted their concerns, claiming that this video seems extremely fake and is just a quick way to gather views for his candidacy. Currently, Hilton is still leading the gubernatorial race on the Republican side.
