‘ICE is about keeping citizens safe’: Michigan Voters Blast Abdul El-Sayed After He Compares ICE Detentions to ‘Government Kidnapping’

Talk about a bad take

Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed faced backlash after comparing ICE detentions to “government kidnapping” in a video. He questioned whether immigration agents respect the safeguards that distinguish lawful arrests from abductions. His remarks drew criticism from voters who defended ICE’s role in enforcing immigration laws and protecting Americans.

ICE is not about immigration. Think about the difference between an arrest and a kidnapping. ICE is about normalizing a paramilitary force on our streets. pic.twitter.com/fe4ykk1izk

In the video, El-Sayed asked, “What is the difference between an arrest and kidnapping?” He described arrests as involving identification, an explanation for detention and an opportunity to challenge the circumstances. By contrast, he defined kidnapping as someone simply being taken off the street.

He then asked viewers whether ICE detentions more closely resemble arrests or kidnappings, emphasizing the importance of the rule of law. “That’s why we have arrest and not government kidnapping,” he said. He added that his family came from a place where government kidnappings occurred.

The Senate nominee went further, questioning whether ICE’s activities under the current administration were genuinely about immigration enforcement. “ICE is about normalizing paramilitary force on our streets,” he argued. Referencing January 6, he warned that normalizing such operations could encourage actions outside constitutional limits.

El-Sayed’s comparison drew sharp responses on X, with critics challenging his interpretation of immigration enforcement and its purpose.

“It’s exactly about immigration and enforcing the law,” one user wrote. Another defended the agency’s role in public safety, stating, “ICE is about keeping citizens safe.” Others questioned his consistency. One person asked, “Did you hate them when Obama used them?”

The criticism also extended to his political ambitions. Another response declared, “We don’t need to think about anything other than stopping YOU from getting anywhere near the Senate.”

However, not everyone rejected his concerns. One user agreed, writing, “Exactly. A paramilitary force that is loyal to a person and not the constitution.”

Another raised allegations about financial incentives behind immigration detention, stating, “Those detention centers are run by companies that basically get paid based on how many people are in them and for how long.”

El-Sayed did not identify specific detention cases in his remarks, leaving his allegations about constitutional safeguards unresolved.
