The “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility in Florida is reportedly set to close in the coming weeks, according to recent announcements. The project, which drew significant public attention during its operation, had been the subject of debate over its costs and purpose. Following news of its planned shutdown, some Florida residents expressed surprise, pointing to the level of public spending involved and questioning how the funds were allocated.
While the news has circulated widely across the country, this report stems from a report shared on the Florida subreddit regarding the reported shutdown of the controversial “Alligator Alcatraz” facility. The information was shared by users who claim to be familiar with its operations, alleging that all detainees will be transferred to other locations by June.
Not long ago, Florida officials discussed the possibility of permanently closing the facility, a move that drew criticism from some residents who pointed to its reported high operating costs. According to some estimates, the site costs around $1 million per day to run, placing significant pressure on the state’s budget.
Now, with news that the detention center is set to close, reports have also suggested that the Florida government has not yet been reimbursed for more than $600 million invested in the project. The development has prompted discussion online, with some Reddit users criticising both the project and its costs.
Florida Redditors Criticize the Overspending on Alligator Alcatraz
Even if some had anticipated the outcome, the closure still comes as a shock given the significant costs involved in building and operating the facility. Some Reddit users have also drawn comparisons to other large-scale projects across the country, with a number describing “Alligator Alcatraz” as a waste of public funds.
“What a crazy grift this was. For reference for non-sports people, a major modern pro sports stadium (like an outdoor NFL or MLB stadium) may cost in the realm of 1.5 billion.“
Others quickly criticized Florida’s governor, DeSantis, as well as Trump’s administration, for questionable management of funds.
“Oh look, I found the wasteful government spending DOGE was talking about!“
“Imagine investing a million a day into our state on things that actually matter. Good lord.“
For now, it remains to be seen whether the state will be reimbursed for its investment or if the facility will close without any of the funds being recovered by Florida.
