Internet Gets Emotional as Utah Man Revisits Life Lessons From Beloved 8th-Grade Teacher 30 Years Later: ‘Through You, She’s Still Teaching’

Teachers are for life!

Impacts can truly stand the test of time, and a man in Utah recently put that on full display in a TikTok post, recounting a lesson he learned from his 8th-grade teacher over 30 years ago. The teacher, whom he identified as Mrs. Yates from South Jordan Middle School, was already in her seventies when she taught him a principle he never forgot. He recalled how she went the extra mile years ago to secure copies of a particular book and then found a creative way to make them meaningful in the classroom.

According to him, Mrs. Yates once volunteered at a major publisher’s event after being told that any teacher who helped out would be allowed to choose a book, with 35 copies donated to their classroom afterward. However, the book she wanted was reportedly not among the approved options. “You say what you want in this life, and if somebody tells you that’s not available to you, or they are not gonna give that to you, do not start negotiating against yourselves. Just stay silent and let them negotiate against themselves,” he recalled her saying while sharing the story behind how she eventually secured the books she wanted.

He explained that instead of arguing or changing her mind, she simply folded her hands and remained silent. Even when she was repeatedly encouraged to choose another title, she stuck with her original request until an exception was eventually made for her. The man went on to explain that Mrs. Yates kept the books in the classroom and never allowed students to take them home. According to him, the book was a vocabulary guide filled with illustrations, unique words, and short explanations. Every school day, students would each take a copy and spend time going through it together.

He added that she would stand before the class daily, tell a memorable story connected to one of the words, and then challenge the students to use that word creatively after school hours. The following day, the class would gather again to discuss how each student had used the word, with the most creative example earning a point. According to him, those lessons continue to help him even decades later.

The Internet Reacted With Admiration And Emotion

The touching story quickly struck a chord online, with many users praising the teacher’s lasting impact. “Through you, she’s still teaching,” one commenter wrote, pointing out how Mrs. Yates’ influence continues to live on through her former students.

More praise poured in as others reflected on the value teachers bring to children’s lives. “I hope every teacher sees this and realizes how freaking important they are to a child’s development,” another user chimed in. Several people also applauded her teaching methods and the powerful lesson on silence and negotiation she passed on to her students. Some even noted how useful the advice could be in business, negotiations, and sales.

Not everyone agreed completely, though. One user offered a different perspective, writing, “You can’t always bully someone with awkwardness into getting things you want; sometimes you’ll just get security called on you.” While the storyteller admitted he still could not remember the exact title of the book and was searching for it, another user stepped in with the title of the book, revealing it to be,”The Weighty Word Book!”
