An Austin, Texas resident is drawing attention online after posting a video criticizing a large Waymo charging facility installed near the Town Lake walkway. The man behind the video argued that the methane-powered setup was disrupting one of the city’s most popular outdoor areas with loud noise and industrial equipment. The clip quickly sparked debate among local residents over development, environmental concerns, and the growing presence of autonomous vehicle infrastructure in Austin.

The video was shared on the Reddit community r/Austin, where it gained more than 1,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments. The post attracted significant attention from local residents, many of whom agreed with the cameraman’s criticism of the facility and expressed frustration about its location near the waterfront trail.

In the video, the resident walks along the Town Lake walkway while filming the large charging site positioned close to the trail. He claims the facility uses refrigerated liquid methane to help power charging operations connected to Waymo vehicles in Texas. Throughout the clip, he criticizes the noise at the site and argues that it clashes with the area’s peaceful atmosphere, known for its greenery, running paths, and public gathering spaces.

The Texas man also questions the environmental tradeoff involved, arguing that replacing traditional vehicle pollution with loud industrial noise creates a different kind of problem for nearby residents and visitors. Near the end of the video, long rows of charging stations and the large fuel tank connected to the site can be seen lined up beside the roadway near the trail.

The footage from Texas does not independently confirm all of the technical claims made in the video about the Waymo facility or its fuel source. Some online commenters later claimed the generators appeared to be temporary mobile units rather than permanent infrastructure. Others argued that using methane-powered generators for charging stations is more expensive than connecting directly to the electrical grid and may only be a short-term solution.

The reaction online quickly became heated. “That’s disgusting, can we sign a petition to take them out of there,” one user wrote. Another commenter suggested gathering signatures directly along the walking trail, saying support would likely come quickly from local residents.

Many commenters criticized city leadership and accused officials of allowing industrial-style equipment to be placed too close to a public recreation area. Several users encouraged residents to contact city council members, local journalists, and television stations in hopes of increasing public pressure over the installation.

Some commenters also questioned whether the site had been properly permitted and raised concerns about possible environmental or safety risks. Others claimed Texas state laws have reduced the ability of local governments to regulate autonomous vehicle operations and certain temporary generator systems.

The discussion also expanded into broader debates about Texas development politics. Some users blamed environmental and anti-development lawsuits for blocking previous housing plans on the property, which they claimed eventually led to the land being leased for industrial use instead.

Not all commenters agreed with the criticism. A smaller number of users argued the facility was likely temporary and said the online backlash was exaggerated. The debate continued spreading online as Texas residents argued over the future of the waterfront area and the impact of new technology projects on public spaces.
