A teacher in Florida is facing accusations of racism after she allegedly wrapped a charger cord around the neck of a Black baby doll in front of her students.
The mother of a Black student in the class shared the controversial video online, documenting the teacher’s actions. The teacher was identified as an art teacher at Barrington Middle School which is part of Hillsborough County Public School System. According to the mother, the teacher’s name is Karen Savage.
In the video shared by the mother, the teacher could allegedly be seen hanging the Black doll with a charger cord. A photo included in the video showed the doll after the cord had been wrapped around its neck. The video also featured a picture of the teacher along with a screenshot of what was described as her Instagram account, where the bio reportedly included the phrase “God is Great.”
According to the mother, students in the class immediately called out what she described as a “blatant, disgusting act of hate.” She alleged that when the students asked the teacher why she had hung the doll, the teacher “laughed it off.” The mother also claimed that the teacher later justified her actions by saying she was trying to “get their attention,” referring to the students in the classroom.
The mother also said the incident deeply affected students from different racial and cultural backgrounds. According to her, the students were “deeply offended and disturbed by this racist act.” She added that concerns about the teacher’s behavior were brought to the school principal. Now, the matter was ultimately left for the Hillsborough County School Board to address.
“We are watching closely, and we are waiting to see exactly what this district is going to do. Will they protect our children, or will they protect a teacher who simulates a lynching in a classroom? This will NOT be swept under the rug!!” the mom wrote.
In a later comment, the mother shared an update regarding the incident. According to her, the school sent an automated message to parents. In it, they informed them that the district had opened an official investigation into the situation. She also stated that the teacher had been removed from the classroom pending the outcome of the investigation.
