Internet users are expressing outrage online after the children’s television franchise Sesame Street shared a social media post celebrating Pride Month.
Pride Month is celebrated every June to honor the history, achievements, and contributions of LGBTQ+ people. It commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City, a pivotal moment in the movement for LGBTQ+ rights. Throughout the month, many communities hold events, parades, and educational activities to raise awareness, celebrate diversity, and promote equality and inclusion for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
In a post shared by the official X account for Sesame Street, the organization wrote, “Happy #PrideMonth from Sesame Street! Join us in celebrating and uplifting the LGBTQIA+ members of our community.” The post also included several heart emojis in colors associated with the Pride flag.
The post sparked significant debate online, with some critics arguing that a children’s program should not participate in Pride Month messaging, while others defended the post as consistent with the show’s long-standing emphasis on inclusion and respect for different communities. Several public figures also weighed in on the discussion, including Marjorie Taylor Greene, who criticized the post.
“Sesame Street should not be celebrating or promoting the way adults have sex and identify. Nor should any children’s group. Leave kids out of sexual identity politics and protect children’s innocence‼ Just let them grow up‼” she wrote on X.
Viewers Outraged After Sesame Street’s Pride Month Post
The post sparked reactions online. Many viewers who opposed the Pride Month post from Sesame Street argued that children’s programming should not be involved in discussions related to sexual orientation or gender identity. As a result, some expressed strong criticism online. “This is absolutely disgusting. Isn’t this a show for kids?? Why are you guys pushing this onto children?” one person wrote. Another commenter said, “Good to know Sesame Street is pushing Trans ideology on children. Disgusting [expletive] groomers. What a disappointment.”
More people voiced their opposition to the Pride Month post. One commenter wrote, “No, we aren’t going to allow you to sexualize our children and use them for your obscene political movements anymore. We are done letting you act as the gateway drug of perversion for our kids.” Another person said, “Guys, there is no universe in which it makes sense to message to children about sexual desires, regardless of worldview. Stop and think about what you’re doing.”
The Pride Month post shared by Sesame Street sparked a broader conversation about the role of children’s media in addressing social and cultural topics. While many critics argued that children’s shows should not participate in Pride Month celebrations, others supported the post, saying that messages of inclusion and acceptance can help children understand and respect people from different backgrounds. The differing reactions highlighted the ongoing debate over how and when such topics should be discussed in programming aimed at young audiences.
