New Jersey Customer Confronts Gas Station Workers Over Alleged Fuel Scam, But Not Everyone Is Convinced: ‘You See It Right There’

Filling up your car is expensive enough without worrying about whether you’re actually getting the fuel you’re paying for. That’s why a viral video from New Jersey is attracting so much attention online after a customer confronted gas station workers over what he believed was a fuel scam. As tempers flared, the confrontation quickly turned into a heated debate, with some viewers convinced he uncovered something suspicious and others arguing the alleged scam doesn’t add up.

The video is filmed by the customer involved in the dispute and opens with him inspecting a petrol pump. At one point, he can be seen lifting part of the nozzle assembly and pointing to what he believes is a screw hidden inside the mechanism. To the worker, the man exclaims, “Take that the [expletive] out. You see it right there. You know what that is.“

The Shell employee quickly grows frustrated with the customer and begins firing back with expletives of his own. As the argument escalates, he denies the accusation, telling the man, “No, I don’t know what this is.” Growing increasingly exasperated with the worker’s denials, the customer issues an ultimatum, “Take that [expletive] [expletive] out or I’m calling the cops.“

Moments later, a second employee steps in and begins trading insults with the customer, adding to the increasingly heated exchange. After a back-and-forth, the customer points to the alleged screw in the pump and states, “Take it out right now. I’ll ruin your whole company if you don’t take that out. That is not [expletive] legal!“

At the end of the clip, there’s some additional context from the original uploader that attempts to explain the alleged gas fraud and reads as follows:

If you ever see a pump with a screw blocking the pump stop and the receipt dispenser is “out of the order,” they’re scamming your card and using it to fill their vehicles with your money.

Viewers React to Alleged Fuel Scam

The footage has sparked reactions online. Some viewers initially appeared to side with the customer and were curious about the alleged scam he believed he had uncovered. One confused Reddit user wrote, “What’s the supposed scam?” while another replied, “After you leave they fill their own vehicles on your same tab, supposedly. At least thats what the guy is accusing them of.”

Not everyone was convinced, however. A number of commenters questioned whether the alleged scam described in the video would actually work, with some arguing that modern fuel pumps contain safeguards designed to prevent that type of abuse. One person wrote, “Doesn’t make sense, because the nozzle pushes the flap BACKWARDS when it’s hung up (i.e. sensor detects completed transaction), not forwards, where the bolt supposedly stops the flap.” Another was even more dismissive, writing, “Fake scam perpetuated by social media.”

Several viewers also pointed to the technology used in modern pumps, arguing that fuel measurement systems are heavily regulated and difficult to manipulate. As one user put it, “There are scams I’ve heard of working, but this isn’t it.”

Ultimately, almost everyone agreed that the confrontation was dramatic, but not everyone agreed on why it happened. While some viewers felt the customer may have uncovered a legitimate issue, others argued the alleged scam doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. As the clip continues to spread online, the debate remains unresolved, leaving commenters to argue over whether the customer exposed something suspicious or simply got the wrong end of the stick.
