As many may know, this weekend was quite hectic for the gaming industry, especially due to one movement that prevailed in every major showcase: the #WeWantD3 movement. After the announcement of Destiny 2 going into maintenance mode, content creators, players, and even outlets started mentioning how they’d want a Destiny 3, instead of just seeing the legendary shooter fade into oblivion. Well, to make their voices heard, thousands of players spammed #WeWantD3 during Summer Game Fest, State of Play, and even the Xbox Games Showcase. And to make the message clearer, Destiny 2 has recorded its highest concurrent player count since The Edge of Fate‘s launch.
Summer Game Fest’s Most Spammed Message Was #WeWantD3
As many Guardians know already, Destiny 2 is flying away from the Director and into the sunset—no more expansions, no more big updates. Nothing. This heartbreaking news shook the community, with many players, old and new, starting to ask about a Destiny 3, especially since neither Bungie nor Sony mentioned anything about it.
With the new and final update launching today, Guardians started a movement called #WeWantD3, which was the most spammed message during Summer Game Fest and the State of Play. Of course, this movement is done hoping for the studio, and most importantly, Sony, to realize that players don’t want to see the franchise disappear. Instead, they want a new game in the series because, let’s face it, no other shooter has the raids, lore, story, puzzles, and mechanics that Destiny 2 has. So, there’s nothing else out there to fill the void.
While the movement caught the attention of many, players decided to let their actions speak louder, doing one final push during the Monument of Triumph update, which is the biggest update in the history of the game, with around 17,000 words to show every addition, adjustment, and change coming to the game for its final ride.
Destiny 2 Reaches Its Highest Player Count Since The Edge of Fate Launch
As shared by user Mislead, Destiny 2 reached over 100,000 players just 10 minutes after the update went live, with around 150,000 on Steam at the time of writing. This is an even higher player count than the one we saw during the launch of The Edge of Fate, one of the most controversial expansions in the game.
Several content creators and Destiny 2 communities have issued calls to action to log in during this update, aiming to break player records, and hoping for Sony to realize just how beloved the game is and how gamers still want it to stick around. However, despite the movement, the message spamming, and now the many Guardians jumping into the game, which have led to long server queues, Sony hasn’t said anything about it.
Still, many want to keep the flame alive and hope that these actions will make those in charge of potentially making a Destiny 3 realize that it is what players want. Yet, we’ll have to wait and see, as there isn’t any information regarding a successor to Destiny 2 or a sequel. Time will tell.
