Bird Allegedly Dyed Pink for Gender Reveal Ends Up at California Wildlife Rescue: ‘My Gender Reveal Was When the Doctor Said It’s a Boy’

A splash of pink might seem harmless at first glance. On a wild bird, though, it’s a different story.

A California wildlife rescue is garnering attention online after sharing a photo of a bird covered in bright pink coloring that it believes may have been used as part of a gender reveal celebration. The image, shared by Napa Wildlife Rescue on Facebook, shows a white and grey pigeon with bright pink coloring covering much of its wing’s feathers. The photo quickly spread online, where many people said they were heartbroken to see the bird’s condition.

According to the rescue, dye and paint can pose serious risks to birds, affecting everything from their ability to stay warm and avoid predators to their overall health. The organization used the bird’s story to urge people to think twice before involving animals in celebrations and social media stunts.

In its Facebook post, the rescue provided more context about the bird’s condition and the risks associated with dyeing wildlife, writing:

Our hearts break for every bird that we receive who has been dyed for a gender reveal celebration. The toxic fumes compromise their lungs, they’ve ingested poison while preening their feathers, they’ve been rejected by flocks, and they are more vulnerable to prey. There are so many alternatives for a celebration of life, we don’t need to hurt animals along the way.

For many viewers, the photos were difficult to look at. As the post circulated across social media, commenters voiced concern for the pigeon and frustration that an animal may have been put at risk for the sake of a celebration.

Online Community Weighs In

On Facebook, many commenters questioned why celebrations have become so elaborate in the first place. One user wrote, “My gender reveal was when the doctor said it’s a boy,” while another urged people to keep animals out of the equation, adding, “Releasing balloons also hurts wildlife. Bake a cake, make t-shirts, do face painting, but keep it confined to the humans and in the house!”

Others expressed disbelief that gender reveals have evolved into events capable of affecting people, property, and now, according to many commenters, wildlife. A third person asked, “How did we get by for centuries without gender reveals?”

On Reddit, the conversation became even more emotional, with several users arguing that the incident reflected broader concerns about how some people treat animals. One commenter wrote, “Call me an overreactor but I don’t trust people who treat animals like [expletive] to be good parents,” while another took aim at the celebrations themselves, saying, “I don’t trust people who celebrate gender reveals.”

While the pigeon’s full story may never be known, the reaction to the image highlights something many people seem to agree on: wildlife should not become collateral damage in the pursuit of a memorable social media moment.

For many viewers, seeing a white and grey pigeon covered in bright pink coloring was a sobering reminder that animals often have no say in the situations they are placed in, yet can end up bearing the consequences. As the bird recovers, many are hoping the attention surrounding its story encourages people to think twice before involving animals in celebrations that are ultimately meant to be about family, not wildlife.
