While a dog is man’s best friend, sometimes man isn’t a dog’s best friend, and a prime example of this would be a tragically neglected dog spotted in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York. A Reddit user going by the name Doublecheeseburger posted photos of the disheveled and melancholic-looking pet on r/RedHookBK. The poster claimed that they’ve reported the dog to 311 multiple times, but seemingly, nothing’s been done to change the poor pet’s situation.
“This guy just leaves him out there in this concrete corridor all day, in all types of weather. He’s just ignored and forgotten,” Doublecheeseburger wrote, explaining how this has been going on for years. Occasionally, the owner will allegedly hose-spray the dog’s poo into the street, and that’s about all the care the dog allegedly receives besides being fed.
“He’s just sitting there wanting to be let in. Not brushed. Not cared for at all. Just a prop for whoever lives there. Makes me so sad. This guy shouldn’t be allowed to have animals,” OP wrote with understandable frustration. Based on the photos and OP’s explanation, this dog’s role is nothing more than outdoor home decor, as the lack of care and love is very apparent. Dozens of others in the New York-based subreddit were heartbroken by this pet’s mistreatment.
Reddit Shocked at How the Red Hook Dog Is Mistreated
“This breaks my heart. This person is a POS. Thank you for trying to report to 311, I wonder if there is somewhere else to report to,” one commenter wrote. “I work on that block. I know that dog. Been like that for years. I often wonder if they ever let him in,” wondered another, confirming that this pet has been suffering like this for quite a long time. “Unfortunately, I feel like someone just needs to take the dog at this point,” remarked a third.
One person asked Doublecheeseburger whether they had spoken to the owner about the dog and confronted him about his dog’s lack of care. OP responded, “Yes, he’s a mega [expletive]ead and doesn’t care. He’s been reported to 311 so many times and had conversations w multiple neighbors; nothing has changed in years.” A second Redditor asked why OP doesn’t offer to take the dog in, to which they replied that they already have two dogs and are caring for an infant at home.
Based on the history of the owner’s behavior and treatment of his pet, nothing would appear to change for the better for the dog unless something drastic changes. As one person said, “It is not safe right now in this heat,” though the dog already looks like it’s been through a lot regarding harsh weather. Numerous commenters express their eagerness to take the dog in, but unless one of them actually acts on their desire, the pet will continue to sadly exist in the concrete corridor.
