Road rage took on a new meaning as a woman got yelled at and threatened from all directions by police officers in Atlanta, Georgia. The woman put up a video of the exchange on Instagram. Having experienced a similar situation the day before, the woman said in the early seconds of the clip, “Come with me to get arrested, because at this point I will.” She could be seen trying to explain to a group of officers that she just needed to make a turn and that she had been over to another exit, where they had directed her back to where she was.
The officers barked different orders at her simultaneously without offering a solution. The woman pointed to the building she was heading to, just beside the road, but all her explanations fell on deaf ears. At one point, one of the officers threatened that she would face jail time. “Do you wanna go to jail for no reason?” The driver went farther down the road to another group of officers and explained that, although they had directed her to turn elsewhere, she was not allowed to. “I don’t like to be threatened that I’m going to jail when there are no signs,” she lamented.
Social Media Users React With Intense Condemnation For The Officer’s Actions
Netizens stormed the comment section, expressing deep-seated frustration at the authorities’ lack of basic communication and de-escalation skills. Many questioned the motivation of the individuals who joined the force. “I got anxiety watching that interaction,” a viewer wrote. Another shared the sentiment, lamenting how confusing the woman would have found it with three officers bombarding her simultaneously. They added that the incident highlights the lack of communication among the officers themselves.
A user commended the driver’s exceptional composure, noting that the woman’s behavior was far more courteous than she would have expected. A confused viewer wondered why the topic of incarceration came up when someone was merely asking for direction, saying that sort of behavior ought to be against the rules. An individual called for institutional reform, asking that each officer undergo conflict-resolution training. “All police officers should have conflict resolution & mediation training be mandatory because here you are trying to communicate with them and they simply won’t shut up and listen,” the comment read.
Someone else pointed out that it appeared that the officers were intentionally trying to heighten the hostility and commended the woman for refusing to take the bait. A user broadened the scope of the discussion, linking the officers’ performance to the ongoing World Cup, pointing out that their inability to handle domestic issues reflected that Atlanta does not have the capacity to host such a major event. A critical user alleged that individuals who enter law enforcement do not do it to help others but to exert authority over others.
The collective anger online goes to show the deep and growing divide between the people and the individuals sworn to serve them.
