This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Black Widow solo movie has finally found its director with Cate Shortland.

Cate Shortland is a writer and director from South Wales, Australia. Her most recent project was a 2017 drama/thriller titled Berlin Syndrome. Shortland’s hiring concludes Marvel’s longtime search for someone to helm a Black Widow solo film (the studio previously met with over 70 possible directors).

Apparently, Scarlett Johansson was a major impact on this hiring, as she loved Shortland’s Lore. Lore was a critically acclaimed drama that followed a young woman as she tries to lead her siblings through Nazi Germany. Johansson reportedly “admired Shortland’s handling of the female lead” in the film.

It has also been reported that the Black Widow solo movie will take place before the events of Marvel’s The Avengers. This hasn’t been confirmed by anyone at Marvel Studios yet so I would take this bit of information with a grain of salt.

Black Widow

Scarlett Johansson has been playing Natasha Romanoff since Iron Man 2 back in 2010. She has been in supporting roles in films such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and The Avengers saga. Hopefully, the first solo film for the former Russian spy will be a rousing success, much like Wonder Woman was for the DCEU.

There is no release date for Black Widow yet and we probably won’t hear much more from this project for a while due to the MCU’s absence from SDCC this year. Marvel’s first female-centered superhero movie will be Captain Marvel, which is set to release March 8th, 2019.

What are your thoughts on this hiring? Are you excited for a Black Widow solo movie? If not, why? Let us know in the comments and be sure to follow us here at The Nerd Stash for all of your nerdy news and needs!
