Outrage as 17,200 Pro-Trump Californians to Lose Health Insurance Thanks to One Big Beautiful Bill: ‘They’ll Absolutely Blame Democrats’

How did that happen?

A deep-red Northern California county that has long embraced President Donald Trump’s political movement is now facing a harsh reality as tens of thousands of residents could soon lose access to government-backed health coverage under provisions tied to Trump’s signature domestic legislation. Their situation has since sparked outrage and debate online.

In California’s pro-Trump Shasta County, the Trump/GOP “Big Beautiful Bill” will cause 6,000 residents to lose their food assistance, and at least 17,200 to lose their health insurance.

According to local officials in Shasta County and interviews from the San Francisco Chronicle, roughly 17,200 Medi-Cal recipients, or nearly a third of the county’s current enrollment, could lose health insurance coverage due to new eligibility requirements contained in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. An additional 5,700 beneficiaries may be required to requalify twice a year to maintain their benefits.

The changes are hitting one of California’s most conservative regions, where Trump remains popular despite growing concerns about the economic consequences of his policies. Shasta County, located about 200 miles north of San Francisco, has often been cited as a model for grassroots MAGA organizing and has become known for its strong support of Trump-aligned candidates.

The potential loss of health coverage comes at a particularly difficult time for the county. Shasta already struggles with elevated rates of chronic disease, drug overdoses, gun suicides, and a severe shortage of healthcare workers. Local health officials have previously declared a public health crisis as staffing shortages continue to plague the region.

In addition to the threat of losing their health insurance, another 6,000 residents could also face starvation as they are poised to lose their food assistance. Apparently, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will also end supplemental food assistance for able-bodied adults with no dependents. Turns out that’s 1/5 of the Shasta County population.

People online are blaming the Trump voters

The healthcare and food assistance cuts have sparked intense debate online, where many commenters argued that affected voters would refuse to hold Trump or Republicans responsible. Some have resorted to mockery, implying that the Trump voters wouldn’t learn from this situation. “They’ll absolutely blame Democrats,” one viral commenter wrote, echoing a sentiment repeated throughout a lengthy discussion about the looming coverage losses.

Others pointed to a long-running trend of conservative voters crediting Republican leaders for positive developments while blaming Democrats for unpopular outcomes. “When gas prices went up, they were quick to blame [California Governor Gavin] Newsom,” one commenter wrote. “Gas goes down? ‘Thanks Trump!'” Another user mocked what they viewed as predictable political finger-pointing, joking that affected residents would soon be asking, “Why did Sleepy Joe let this happen?!”

Still, despite growing frustrations over healthcare access, rising costs, and local government dysfunction, many critics remain skeptical that the looming loss of insurance for thousands of residents will significantly alter political loyalties. With that said, Shasta County appears to be showing signs of fatigue after years of MAGA-driven governance. Earlier this month, voters removed several high-profile Trump-aligned officials from office, signaling a possible shift away from the hard-right politics that have dominated the county.
