It seems that this week is all about bad news in the gaming industry, with fires appearing everywhere, especially on PlayStation‘s side. First, we got the terrible news that PlayStation just removed hundreds of movies for all users, and now, it is attacking the “tangible” front. Today, Sony announced that the physical disc production for PlayStation games will stop in 2028, meaning that PS5 and whatever console exists at that time will only have digital titles, truly making it seem like one of the most anti-consumer choices Sony has made this week.
PlayStation Physical Discs Will Cease to Exist in 2028
The official PlayStation X account shared the news about the discontinuation of physical discs for PlayStation titles. Sony mentions that this is due to the company “adapting” to new consumer trends, which seem to lean toward digital purchases rather than physical ones. The news also mentions that the transition to digital-only games will start in January 2028, meaning that we have one more year of physical discs before they disappear, at least on PlayStation.
As you can imagine, this has been heartbreaking news for many players, as they feel the game industry is leaning toward an era where gamers don’t own anything. We already saw it with the removal of movies on PlayStation, and all digital games are licensed in the end—we don’t own anything we buy on a digital storefront, especially Sony’s.
And if that news wasn’t bad enough, Sony also announced that they will be shutting down the digital stores of PS3 and PS Vita later this year. The closure will begin in August 2026 for some regions, and, according to the news, players will still be able to download games from the stores after the closure for the “foreseeable future.”
Many gamers are furious, as some still bought the disc version of the PS5 or even the external disc reader for those who only had the digital PS5. Now, some are even considering skipping whatever console comes next, as they won’t own anything at all.
So far, this announcement has caused nothing but backlash, with everyone firing back at Sony and PlayStation for this decision. Even big brands like Domino’s Pizza have mocked the discontinuation of PlayStation physical discs.
Ultimately, gamers are angry, and with good reason. This is truly one of the worst weeks for the gaming industry as studios keep closing, physical media is on the verge of disappearing, and some companies just continue to push anti-consumer trends that will affect gamers worldwide.
