Internet users were left outraged after several police officers in Ohio were filmed roughly arresting a Black pregnant woman. The video quickly spread across social media, with many viewers questioning the officers’ use of force and expressing concern for the woman’s safety during the arrest.
It remains unclear why the woman was being arrested or what led up to the encounter. Some people at the scene alleged that the officers had been harassing her for some time before they moved in to arrest her. In the video, loud shouting can be heard as several officers surrounded the woman, who appeared to be struggling as they attempted to restrain her.
As the officers surrounded the woman, they repeatedly attempted to handcuff her with her hands behind her back, a move that drew widespread criticism online. Handcuffing a pregnant person’s hands behind their back can increase the risk of injury because pregnancy shifts the body’s center of gravity, making falls more likely and making it harder to break a fall if balance is lost. A forward fall could pose risks to both the pregnant woman and the unborn baby. For that reason, many law enforcement agencies recommend avoiding this restraint method for pregnant individuals whenever feasible and instead using alternative restraint techniques that reduce the risk of injury while still maintaining safety.
The officers continued physically restraining the pregnant woman as bystanders watched and recorded the encounter. At one point, an officer stood in front of her while holding what appeared to be a taser. “Tase me,” the woman can be heard saying in the video. The apparent possibility that a taser could be used also drew criticism from many viewers. Using a taser on a pregnant person can pose significant risks to both the mother and the unborn baby. In addition to the effects of the electrical discharge itself, the involuntary muscle contractions and potential loss of balance can increase the likelihood of a fall, which may raise the risk of injury, placental complications, or preterm labor.
In the next part of the video, the woman appeared to be yelling at the officer holding the taser. One of the bystanders can then be heard shouting that she was pregnant. Despite this, the officers continued trying to restrain her and handcuff her hands. The encounter escalated further when the woman was taken to the ground, and two officers appeared to lift and hold her legs while other officers continued attempting to secure her.
After a few moments, the officers released their hold on the woman. She remained seated on the ground with her hands restrained behind her back. She continued yelling at the officers, although the noise at the scene made it difficult to understand what she was saying or how the officers responded. Several bystanders also began shouting and cursing at the officers as the arrest continued.
The officers then brought the woman back to her feet. As she continued yelling, they maintained control of her while her hands remained handcuffed behind her back. At one point, they lifted her restrained arms, causing her upper body to lean forward. They then attempted to raise her again. During the struggle, she appeared to kick a nearby chair before losing her balance and falling to her knees. The video ended with one bystander shouting that the woman was pregnant, while another insisted that she didn’t do anything. It is unclear what happened after the recording stopped.
Viewers Outraged Over Rough Arrest of Pregnant Ohio Woman
The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers were outraged after watching the video. They argued that the level of force used against the Black Ohio pregnant woman was unnecessary. “God I hate these thugs!” one person wrote. Another commenter said, “Brought to you by the modern day Slave Patrol-State Paid Gangsters in AmeriKKKa!”
Despite the criticism, some viewers defended the officers. They argued that the woman must have done something to prompt the arrest. “I’m sure she’s a lovely individual who did nothing wrong. The police were bored that day and thought… ‘why don’t we put some cuffs on that woman over there just for laughs?’ Is THAT what you think?” one person wrote. Another commenter replied, “What I think is that six white men manhandling a pregnant black woman, unarmed in that fashion is the biggest crime. Call a female officer, follow protocol or act like Nazis… it’s an easy choice for them.”
The video sparked a conversation about how police officers should follow established protocols when arresting pregnant women. People believed that they should take steps to minimize the risk of injury whenever possible. It also led to broader discussions about the use of force during arrests. Many people debated how officers should respond when a pregnant woman is resisting and whether safer alternatives could be used.
