When you’re with your family on vacation, you’re obviously trying to have a great time, right?. Sometimes, kids get a little loud on vacation and that’s to be expected. But one dad vacationing in California was shocked when a Karen told his kids to quiet down, leading to an awkward confrontation.
Posted by TikTok user Thaatguuuy, who had been spending some family fun time at the pool with his kids, was suddenly accosted by a passing Karen who demanded, “Can you have a little respect for the people that are living here and be a little bit quieter, please?”
Despite her rudeness, Thaatguuuy apologizes and asks when the pool closes. The woman responds by saying, “8:00, but that doesn’t mean you can be yelling in there.” Again slipping in her snippy comments to Thaatguuuy’s very polite ask.
At any rate, Thaatguuuy does tell the local he’ll try to calm down his child a little bit, but they are just having some fun. To that, she responds in a very condescending way, saying, “And that’s fine, but you should be able to control your own kid.”
Being funny, Thaatguuuy responds by saying, “I can’t control this one.” His child, who wasn’t much bigger than a toddler, then jumps into the pool with a little shriek (which wasn’t even that loud.)
He apologizes to her once again but points out he’s pretty sure they’re allowed to be at the pool until 9. It turns out, the pool is open until 9, but she came out early and told them it closed at 8 to get them out of there sooner. In the end, the local thanks them for considering what she said but then mutters about their child “yelling and screaming” under her breath as she retreats.

In addition to people sharing their revulsion to the local’s behavior, they shared their two cents on how they would’ve handled the situation. “You were WAY toooo nice,” wrote one commenter. This started a thread, where a viewer shared a saying related to handling social situations like this, “Kill them with kindness.”
One viewer shared their experience, where they had a similar run-in with their own Karen. “We had the same experience at our Airbnb kinda ruined the excitement of the $9000 rental.”
A TikTok viewer admitted they couldn’t have handled the local as well as Thaatguuuy, saying, “I can’t respond as well as you did. It’s just not in me although I do try.”
“People are just mean! Let’s kid have fun!” the top comment reads. And really, that’s the essence of this confrontation. Not only was the family enjoying themselves, they weren’t so loud that it was disruptive. A TikTok user even said they “love listening to the delight of kids at the pool or beach!” Be more like them!
