Virginia Angry as SNAP Loses 100K People And Agriculture Secretary Rollins Celebrates Record Cuts: ‘They could learn how to shop and cook’

Some residents in Virginia are angry and sounding off as Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins celebrates historic cuts to food assistance. These cuts have caused a contentious back and forth over whether a major drop in SNAP enrollment is a good or awful thing to have occurred. The controversy got worse after Virginia reported losing over 100,000 people from its Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) rolls.

Under President Trump’s leadership, we are ending SNAP fraud and protecting taxpayer dollars.

SNAP benefits should go to the Americans who need them most — not fraudsters exploiting the system.

In recent days, Agriculture Secretary Rollins has touted impressive numbers and billions being saved as a result of fraud and other neglectful waste. This coincides with recent reports that Virginia has lost an eye-popping 100,000 folks enrolling in SNAP benefits across the state compared to the same time last year. This was the whole plan, with President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill designed to reshape SNAP and EBT, both in terms of how much is given out and the types of food that can be purchased with them.

This has caused a massive uproar among Virginia natives, even if they don’t use SNAP themselves. Most argue it’s greedy and a disgrace, as poor families or folks with disabilities are impacted, while others believe the numbers dropped because fraud and illegal immigrants are no longer getting some government-sponsored freebies. In a Facebook post, they took umbrage with these numbers.

“Roanoke Mental Health needs to get to know their clients, not just give them a ride. They will tell their worker that they know how to cook, but the worker does not know the truth. Their worker should ask the client to show them how they do this or that. If they could learn how to shop and cook it would help them, SNAP, and food pantries”

“Stopping fraud so citizens that need it can receive it.”

“Dropped because illegal immigrants and other ineligible people were removed.”

“There are senior citizens and disabled people who’s SNAP was either cut or reduce to pay for the Rich tax cuts that they made permanent. Senior citizens who’s monthly income of $1300 will get $25 a month in SNAP. Know what you’re voting for.”

According to the state, the sharp decline in SNAP participation follows a series of newly implemented administrative reviews and stricter eligibility checks. While advocates warn that the sudden loss of benefits will leave thousands of vulnerable children and low-income families hungry, supporters of the cuts argue that the policy successfully weeds out fraud and encourages self-sufficiency.
