One Virginia woman claims to have allegedly committed a crime against her neighbor’s family over her address being used for their mail. Going by the username User512897 on Reddit, she posted a story in r/confession, explaining how she had thrown away someone else’s newly renewed driver’s license from the DMV into the trash. “I straight chucked that thing in the garbage. Along with a few mail in regards to her car insurance,” OP wrote.
User512897 says it all started when she was sorting through bills and paperwork she had to manage after her late husband’s passing in December 2025. When she first saw the mail from the DMV, she thought it was for him. However, to her surprise, it was a stranger’s license, whose last name matched her neighbors’.
The woman claims her neighbors are “nice people” but have lots of extended family, one of whom might be the culprit. “This doesn’t bother me at all. Her using (mistakenly probably) my address on her DMV license does bother me greatly,” User512897 wrote. She added that this wasn’t the first time this individual had used her address for their mail; only this time, she discovered they shared a surname with her neighbors.
“I could have walked the mail over and asked my neighbor that she have her family member update her address. I did not,” User512897 recalled. Though several Redditors are certain that wasn’t a good idea. “It’s a federal crime to throw away someone else’s first-class mail,” remarked a commenter. According to Cornell Law School, 18 U.S. Code § 1702 states that OP could be fined or sentenced to up to 5 years.

At first, the Virginia woman tried to deny that it was a crime, but after realizing the comments were right, she didn’t seem too bothered. “So I committed a crime. Cool. I just researched and this person also committed a crime by using an address she does not live at for her car insurance,” she wrote in response.
Other commenters, who were less accusatory than those pointing out her crime, added that this could be considered identity theft. One highly upvoted comment suggested that she tell the DMV, post office, and US Postal Inspector that her address is being wrongfully used.
In response to these more supportive comments, OP was somewhat apologetic about what she did. “As I have been thinking about this more and more today…yes it was stupid to have chucked it in the garbage.” Still, what she did could get her into big trouble, so making sure she reports and explains everything to the right people will be crucial.
As one commenter pointed out, one of the more concerning things is how the culprit was able to use her address as her own at the DMV to obtain her license. In other words, they had proof of residency, which might mean things might ultimately need to be taken up with the police as well.
