‘I Hope She Didn’t Move’: New York World Cup Watch Party Sparks Debate After Woman With Afro Is Asked to Change Seats

And here we are, talking about Black hair again.

A New York creator is going viral after sharing a video claiming a group of women at a World Cup watch party asked a girl with an Afro to move seats because they could not see the screen. While some argued the request was a reasonable concern about visibility, others saw the situation differently, with many less focused on the seating dispute and more concerned about the girl’s experience.

TikTok user @alenatattoos didn’t film the moment itself, only what came after. In the video, she narrates what she says happened just off camera. “These ladies behind me asked this girl to move her seat because they couldn’t see the screen,” she says.

The rest of the clip shows the girl sitting with her head down, not saying much as the New York creator continues filming around her.

TikTok Has Thoughts

Many took to the comments to share their concern, with several questioning what happened after the exchange.“Is the young lady with the fro okay? I don’t like seeing her hunched over,” one person wrote. Another added, “I hope she didn’t move.”

Some directed their frustration at the New York TikToker instead, questioning why she didn’t step in. “And what did you do to defend her?” one viewer asked. Another was more pointed: “And what did you say in response to that unreasonable request? Posting about it isn’t it. Say something to them.”

A smaller group pushed back on the framing altogether, arguing the request wasn’t out of line. “Well it’s kinda like holding a big ass sign and waving it around. People behind you can’t see, especially when its seats,” one commenter wrote. Another simply called it a “valid request.”

Ultimately, the conversation extended beyond the watch party itself, with many using the moment to discuss the broader issue of how Black hair is perceived and treated in public spaces.
