It is pretty safe to say that No Man’s Sky was one of the most disappointing games released in recent memory. The Hello Games title failed to live up to its lofty expectations, not including key features that were promised, ending up with a boatload of bad critic and user reviews and refunds as a result. But everyone loves a comeback story.

Two years after its release, No Man’s Sky is one of the most played games on Steam, Xbox One, and PS4 at the moment. In a Twitter post earlier this week, game developer Sean Murray revealed that the NEXT update has resulted in a Steam concurrent player base of over 50,000, with a peak of 60,000.

Never thought we'd be here, two years later. NMS is one of the most played games in the world this week on PC, PS4 and XBox, each day has been bigger than the last 🙏

While that number may not compare to juggernauts like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), sitting at approximately 209k concurrent users and a peak of 1.3 million, and DOTA 2, sitting at approximately 260k concurrent users and a peak of 634k, it is still impressive considering the way the game struggled upon release two years prior.

In a recent blog post, Murray promises that the NEXT update will be the first of a bright new future for No Man’s Sky.

“One day I hope to reach a point where I feel No Man’s Sky is “finished”, but luckily there’s still so much more we want to do. Working on NEXT feels important to us, but I know it’s not the end of the journey. We know the journey would be more fun together,” Murray concludes.
