A black man in Washington was filmed directing a racist anti-Asian rant at an Asian driver during an encounter that appeared to be unprovoked.

The driver shared a video of the encounter and described what they said had happened. According to the driver, they were sitting in their vehicle when the man approached and began directing racist anti-Asian remarks toward them.

In the video, the man stood near the vehicle while yelling at the driver. “You don’t belong in this country. This is America,” he said. He then continued, “It’s my country. My country. America,” while continuing to shout.

The man continued the rant by telling the driver, “Go back to your country,” and to leave America. Throughout the encounter, the driver did not appear to respond and instead continued recording the interaction. The man then made additional racist remarks, including accusing Asian people of committing identity theft.

The man’s anti Asian rant continued as he went on to accuse Asian people of taking over hospitals and libraries. The video ended with him telling the driver, “You kill Latasha Harlins.” It is unclear whether he left after making that remark or if the confrontation continued after the recording ended.

The man’s final remark referenced the 1991 killing of Latasha Harlins, a 15 year old black girl who was fatally shot inside a convenience store in South Central Los Angeles by Korean American store owner Soon Ja Du following a confrontation over a bottle of orange juice. The case drew national attention after security camera footage and the police investigation indicated that Harlins had money in her hand to pay for the juice and was walking away when she was shot.

Du was convicted of voluntary manslaughter but was sentenced to probation, community service, and a fine rather than prison. The case became a major source of public outrage and has remained a significant and painful moment in discussions about race relations in the United States.

In addition to sharing the video, the driver warned others about the encounter and encouraged people to stay aware of their surroundings. They said they remained inside their locked vehicle for their own safety during the incident. They also wrote, “Please stay safe and aware of your surroundings in the South Lake Union area.” No additional details were shared about the interaction.

Viewers Attack Washington Man Over Racist Rant

The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers expressed outrage over the Washington man’s remarks toward the Asian driver. Some questioned whether his behavior was connected to mental health concerns, with one person writing, “These sound like the rambling delusions of an unwell man.” Another commenter pushed back against that explanation, saying, “Stop letting them off with the mental illness excuse — it’s just hate, plain and simple.”

Others used the incident to discuss racism within communities, with some commenters making broader claims about anti-Asian prejudice. “Asian American hate stays alive in the black community, apparently. I got in the middle of an almost assault in the international district like 5 years back, sad to see aggressive black men still taking out their aggression against Asian women,” one person wrote. Another commenter rejected the man’s behavior, saying, “On behalf of the black community we don’t claim this [expletive]. Would have laid into him myself if I saw this happening.”

The video sparked a conversation about the racist harassment that some Asian people experience. This is along with the importance of addressing such incidents. It also led to discussions about holding people accountable for racist behavior. In addition to the role of sharing information to help others stay aware of potentially harmful encounters.
