A woman in Louisiana was criticized online after saying she believed The Cheesecake Factory’s Skinnylicious menu is fatphobic.
The Cheesecake Factory’s SkinnyLicious menu is a selection of lighter meals designed for guests looking for lower calorie options without giving up variety. Most SkinnyLicious entrées contain fewer than 590 calories, while many of the salads, sandwiches, tacos, and appetizers are also lower in calories than their regular menu counterparts.
The menu includes options such as grilled salmon, Tuscan chicken, steak medallions, burgers, salads, and pasta dishes. While these meals are generally lower in calories, several still contain moderate or relatively high amounts of fat because they include ingredients such as salmon, avocado, olive oil, cheese, nuts, and other sources of healthy fats. As a result, the SkinnyLicious menu focuses primarily on portion control and lower calorie meals rather than being a low fat menu.
In a video, the woman began by saying, “Cheesecake Factory’s SkinnyLicious menu is fatphobic.” She then argued that both the name of the menu and its focus on lower calorie meals marketed as “healthier options” were, in her view, fatphobic.
The woman doubled down on her position, insisting that what she was saying was not an opinion but a fact. She ended the video by saying, “And I would say argue with your mama, but she probably fatphobic, too.”
After receiving backlash, the woman posted additional videos defending her position. In one video, she argued that being thin does not necessarily mean a person is healthy and discussed what she described as weight stigma in society. In another, she claimed that The Cheesecake Factory was presenting its SkinnyLicious menu as “better” than its regular menu options. She went on to argue that the SkinnyLicious menu was “always made to be fatphobic.”
Viewers Attack Louisiana Woman Over Menu Name Controversy
The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers mocked and criticized the Louisiana woman over her comments about The Cheesecake Factory’s SkinnyLicious menu, arguing that they disagreed with her interpretation. “Is skinny dipping fatphobic?” one person joked. Another commenter wrote, “You didn’t see the other 72 chunkylicous pages?”
More viewers criticized the woman’s argument, with one person writing, “No shade but the word skinny should not be triggering yall this bad.” Others, however, defended her perspective. “Yall hate fat women so much that you won’t even listen to them when they have a point. Calling healthy meals ‘SkinnyLicious’ makes it sound like skinny is healthy, which it isn’t. She’s right and yall are mad [expletive],” another commenter wrote.
The video sparked a conversation about whether marketing terms such as “SkinnyLicious” can be viewed as offensive or exclusionary by some people.
