A woman in California sparked outrage after she was accused of encouraging her teenage daughter to become a mother so the family could allegedly qualify for free housing and food assistance.
A video shared online was claimed to have been filmed by the woman herself. Text over the video read, “I knew raising a teen mom would pay off eventually.” The footage showed her kitchen counter covered with a large assortment of groceries.
The woman then claimed that her daughter “understood the assignment” after she allegedly told her that becoming a teen mother came with “unlimited food stamps, child support, and Section 8 housing for free.” She proceeded to show the groceries that she claimed they had received through those benefits, saying, “I’m so proud of her.” The remainder of the video showed her filming a young child who was presumed to be her daughter’s.
Some low-income teenage mothers in the United States may qualify for government assistance programs such as SNAP (food assistance), WIC, Medicaid, and, in some cases, subsidized housing if they meet the programs’ income and eligibility requirements. In the video, the woman claimed that she encouraged her daughter to become a teen mother because she believed those benefits would provide the family with free food and housing.
While some critics have argued that government assistance can incentivize a small number of people to become pregnant intentionally, there is no conclusive evidence showing that these programs broadly encourage teenage pregnancy.
