In an impressive display of bravery, a man in Seattle, Washington, opened his home up as a shelter to strangers when a mass shooting broke out at a festival. A viral Instagram video, taken by the homeowner, captured the moment. Reassuring the numerous people who rushed into the house, the man behind the camera said, “No, this is my house. You guys are fine,” offering them safer spots to take cover. When everyone was inside, he asked what was going on and where the gunshots were coming from.

Hispanic man let a panicked crowd fill his home—to escape mass shooting in Seattle.

The shooting happened right outside his house.

"This is my house, you're fine," he says.

Another gunshot was heard outside while they were in the house. Standing by the window, someone could be seen running past to take cover. After a couple of moments, the clip showed that the authorities had arrived and were treating people who were injured. The man panned the camera around, showing the ruckus that was left behind as people rushed for shelter and many people being reunited with their loved ones.

As reported by News Channel 9, the shooting occurred during the Bite of Seattle festival at the Seattle Center, and it left three people dead and at least four others injured, including a 2-year-old. Although no official arrest has been made, the Police Department confirmed that a 15-year-old is being detained in relation to the shooting.

Online Communities Rally To Honor Washington Man For Sheltering Strangers

Netizens expressed overwhelming gratitude and admiration for the man’s actions, with many raising concerns about self-preservation and instincts.

“Now, that’s what you call a real hero!” an enthusiastic user wrote. Overflowing with gratitude, multiple users thanked the resident for stepping up as a protective figure. Admitting that their own survival instinct would have kicked in, an observer confessed, “He’s a decent human. I would have been so far away from my door……no one would be let in.” Calling back to fundamental moral principles, a user praised the homeowner for showing unconditional love for his fellow human beings.

Raising broader concerns, an observer said, “A decent man who is also a hero. This is a man, being Hispanic, who could very well be assaulted and arrested by ICE simply by fitting the description of those America doesn’t want.” Recounting how close to the shooting they were, an eyewitness detailed the horror they and their friend faced, saying it was terrifying.
