Maine Suffers Brutal Medicaid Cuts from Trump Law After Voting for Him: ‘Elections Do Have Consequences’

This tune sounds familiar

Rural Maine is in trouble. The communities in the state that helped Donald Trump win the 2024 presidential election are now facing a potentially painful consequence of his administration’s sweeping Medicaid changes, with hospitals and local economies among those at risk. Apparently, the state’s current struggles are a direct result of Trump’s One Big Beautiful Act taking effect.

The Trump administration’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” signed into law in July 2025, significantly reduces federal Medicaid spending while introducing new eligibility and administrative requirements. A Maine Center for Economic Policy analysis estimates that roughly 31,000 Mainers could lose Medicaid coverage because of the law’s new administrative burdens. Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz has also chimed in on the matter, claiming that Medicaid in Maine lacked justification.

The consequences of the cuts could be particularly severe in rural areas, where hospitals already operate on razor-thin margins and depend heavily on Medicaid revenue. A University of North Carolina analysis previously identified 338 hospitals nationwide as being at risk of closure because of the law, including two in Maine.

Medicaid is especially important to these facilities because rural Maine has higher rates of poverty and fewer residents with access to private insurance. All four hospitals receive a larger share of their payments from Medicaid than the national median. The impact could extend far beyond healthcare since Hospitals facing declining Medicaid revenue may be forced to consider layoffs, service reductions, or closures.

People online erupt over the Medicaid fallout

The political irony has not gone unnoticed. Rural Maine largely backed Trump in 2024, and critics now argue that voters are confronting the consequences of policies they supported. The potential impact on rural hospitals has also sparked a fierce reaction online, with social media users debating whether Maine communities are now experiencing the consequences of the political choices made at the ballot box.

One commenter summed up that sentiment with a rant, “Is ‘good, [expletive] them’ an appropriate response? Cause it really seems like it is. I guess elections do have consequences,” while another argued that rural communities were “getting what they voted for.” Another Reddit user pointed out just how common this kind of irony was in the past few years.

“Rural area and trump [expletive] them over. Name a more perfect duo. Oh but they will still vote for the people that are destroying their lives because democrats gave them hillbilly measle cancer,” writes the commenter. Some social media even suggested that residents might blame Democrats rather than the federal law responsible for the Medicaid reductions. For rural communities, the argument over who deserves blame may matter less than whether hospitals can remain open and residents can continue receiving care.
