Grocery shopping does not usually end in a physical fight, but that is exactly what happened outside a California supermarket this week. Now, a video of the incident is making the rounds online, with people debating shoplifting, security tactics, and how far someone should go to stop a theft.

The confrontation happened outside a Food 4 Less grocery store in Los Angeles, California, according to a video shared by the X account @ExxAlerts. The footage shows a uniformed security guard confronting a woman near the store’s entrance after allegedly catching her trying to leave with several slabs of ribs without paying.

A physical struggle then breaks out as the guard appears to try to stop the woman or get the merchandise back. Several packaged slabs of ribs and other pieces of meat fall from her grip and scatter across the parking lot as the two struggle near the entrance.

The woman eventually pulls away and walks off. She appears to still be carrying a bag, while the guard remains near the scattered meat and the store’s front doors.

Internet Reacts to California Ribs Theft Confrontation

Reactions online leaned heavily toward criticism of the woman’s demeanor in the clip. One commenter wrote, “She wasn’t ashamed or embarrassed to be a thief . She seemed annoyed they took it back. This mentality needs to be squashed. It needs to be shamed ridiculed and shunned,” while another took a jab at the store itself, joking, “She didn’t want her Food 4 Less, she wanted her Food 4 Free.”

Others turned their frustration toward the legal system. A third commenter argued, “Yet she won’t be arrested thanks to CA’s insane laws,” reflecting a broader debate over California’s retail theft policies. Not everyone piled on, though – one commenter took a more sympathetic view, writing, “People stealing food is always going to be heartbreaking.”

A fifth simply marveled at the physical chaos of it all, noting, “Those ribs really took flight. Security wasn’t playing around.”

The discussion about California’s theft laws also points to a real change in the state’s rules. For about a decade, Proposition 47 made theft of goods worth $950 or less a misdemeanor, regardless of a person’s criminal record.

That changed in December 2024, when California voters approved Proposition 36. The law brought back the possibility of felony charges for repeat offenders with two or more previous theft convictions, even when the stolen goods are worth less than $950.
