Hayden Panettiere once received a terrifying prediction about how little time she might have left. The Heroes actress died Sunday after being found unresponsive at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina. She was only 36. Now, one particularly chilling passage from the memoir she released just months before her death is receiving renewed attention.
Panettiere revealed that years of alcohol addiction had taken such a serious toll on her health that she developed jaundice. Next came a warning from a doctor she would never forget.
“A doctor told me that if I didn’t stop drinking, I’d be dead within five years,” Panettiere wrote in This Is Me: A Reckoning.
The disturbing admission has taken on new weight following Panettiere’s sudden death. However, authorities have not announced an official cause of death, and there is currently no established connection between her death and the alcohol-related health problems she described.

Panettiere entered treatment in 2020 and remained there for approximately eight months. She later described suffering severe withdrawal symptoms, including shaking, insomnia and panic as her body adjusted to life without alcohol.
Eventually, however, something changed.
“Joy was a million times better than any drug,” Panettiere recalled realizing during treatment.
The actress had spoken openly about how addiction became intertwined with some of the most difficult periods of her life. She discussed struggling with postpartum depression, being separated from daughter Kaya and turning to alcohol while trying to cope with painful circumstances around her.
What makes the resurfaced warning particularly heartbreaking is just how optimistic Panettiere had sounded recently.
While promoting her memoir in May, the actress spoke about surviving addiction, trauma and years of personal turmoil while finally looking toward what came next.
“I have a lot more life to live,” she said during an appearance with Jay Shetty.
Panettiere expressed a similar sense of purpose during another interview that month.
“I can hopefully leave the world a better place than I found it,” she said.
That optimism now stands in painful contrast to the news of her death just months later.
Reaction online has also quickly turned toward the uncertainty surrounding exactly what happened to Panettiere, particularly as speculation about a possible overdose began spreading before an official cause of death had been determined.
“This article reads like a squirrel dodging traffic on a highway,” one X user wrote while criticizing reports for repeatedly referencing an overdose without confirming it.
Another user was even more direct.
“So irresponsible to come out with that headline for clicks when you don’t know yet!” they wrote. “Autopsy hasn’t been performed.”
“More news outlets need to check your facts straight,” another person added, noting that Panettiere’s death was still being investigated.
Other posts went much further, circulating unsupported theories about what may have happened to the actress. At this point, however, authorities have not substantiated those claims.
Panettiere was found unresponsive Sunday afternoon before lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. Greenville police said their preliminary investigation found no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances. An autopsy was expected to help determine what caused her death.
That makes the doctor’s five-year warning undeniably chilling in hindsight, but whether Panettiere’s previous addiction struggles had anything to do with her death remains unanswered.
Her father remembered his daughter following her death as an “incredible light and a force of nature.”
