Recent reports indicate that former U.S. Representative Mike Rogers received nearly $100,000 in donations from the telecom industry over the years and pursued policies that sought to expand government access to Americans’ data. This revelation did not sit well with some Michigan residents, who criticized the Republican currently running for the U.S. Senate against Democrat Abdul El-Sayed.

As reported by Michigan Advance, Rogers received nearly $100,000 in campaign contributions via numerous PACs between 2006 and 2025 from companies such as AT&T, Verizon, and CTIA. Most of them were small donations, with at least 21 contributions recorded, according to the records.

During his time in Congress, Rogers sponsored bills that affected privacy and data sharing. One of them was the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, which would have allowed telecom and internet companies to share large amounts of users’ personal data with federal agencies, including the NSA, without court oversight. Ultimately, the bill never became law, though, after facing resistance in the Senate.

By connecting the funds Rogers received with his general pro-telecom industry stance, the reports highlighted a possible connection between the two, which led some voters on Reddit’s r/Michigan to complain about the politician. One user wrote: “This Mike Rogers guy doesn’t seem to be on the up and up.”

Another Michigan resident commented: “Compromised. Now imagine the deals we aren’t able to look into.” Someone else said, sarcastically: “It’s almost like politicians who accept donations don’t have our best interests in mind.”

Some folks also compared the situation to what they believed could be happening with local councils approving data centers: “I guarantee the checks the data companies are cutting to the local council members in Michigan to approve data centers are a fraction of that. Doesn’t take much to buy people, especially in this economy.”

Overall, most people discussing the news were skeptical about Rogers, especially considering he has a chance of becoming a U.S. senator this year. One user summarized the feelings of many: “I think I’m voting for Abdul.”
