Gov. Mikie Sherrill’s ‘Presenting No Evidence’ Remark Sparks Backlash After 6,600 Noncitizens Were Added to New Jersey Voter Rolls

Numbers vs. wording.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said on CNN that Trump is “presenting no evidence” on voter fraud, after she disclosed about 6,600 non-citizens on the state’s rolls and roughly 400 votes. The clip is drawing sharp replies.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill is facing criticism online after accusing President Donald Trump of making “spurious claims” about voter fraud while “presenting no evidence” during a recent CNN appearance. Critics quickly contrasted those remarks with Sherrill’s earlier disclosure that around 6,600 noncitizens had been mistakenly added to the state’s voter rolls because of a software error, with more than 300 later casting ballots.

The clip shows Sherrill on CNN’s Erin Burnett OutFront, with on-screen text reading “NJ Governor on Trump’s Repeated Voter Fraud Claims.” In the excerpt, she says, “I think what the people of New Jersey want to see is a transparent, accountable government so they understand what’s going on and how it’s going to be fixed and rectified,” then adds that Trump is “making spurious claims, presenting no evidence, constantly hiding the ball from people.”

The Presler version also cuts in press-briefing footage labeled “New Jersey Finds 6K Non-Citizens Accidentally Registered to Vote.” The short clip does not include Burnett’s full question or the rest of the interview.

Reporting on the same CNN appearance, Sherrill said she refused a federal request for New Jersey’s voter rolls and contrasted the state’s earlier disclosure with what she called Trump’s “spurious claims” and lack of evidence.

She said, “What the people of New Jersey want to see is a transparent, accountable government.” State officials have said about 6,600 people who indicated they were not U.S. citizens were improperly added to the rolls through a Motor Vehicle Commission problem, and that fewer than 400 later voted; Sherrill has said there was no evidence those ballots changed an election outcome.

How Viewers Are Responding to the CNN Exchange

Many commenters focused on the contrast between Sherrill’s earlier disclosure and her CNN remarks. One wrote that she “announced the 6,600 names and the 400 votes herself. Then she said there’s no evidence.”

Another said, “You don’t get to disclose the crime and then pretend the crime didn’t happen.”

A second group described the remarks as dishonest. One user called the clip “gaslighting,” and others wrote, “She is a liar.”

Some asked whether the state’s figures were incomplete, including: “And how many more have not been exposed?”

A smaller group treated the episode as a limited error, with one commenter writing that New Jersey “mistakenly registered about 6,600 non-citizens due to a software error” and that “there’s no evidence they knowingly voted illegally.”

For now, the clip is part of a wider argument over how New Jersey’s voter-roll disclosure should be described. Online reaction remains split between those who treat Sherrill’s CNN remarks as a contradiction and those who see the episode as a limited registration error.
