North Carolina‘s growing battle over data centers is back in the spotlight after Attorney General Jeff Jackson called for new measures to prevent their soaring energy demands from driving up costs for residents. The announcement comes as an earlier decision to scrap a proposed $19.2 billion data center in Edgecombe County is receiving fresh attention online, with North Carolinians celebrating what many see as a major victory for local opposition.
According to Data Center Dynamics, the proposed development was a $19.2 billion AI data center planned for the Kingsboro development area near Tarboro in Edgecombe County. Energy Storage Solutions withdrew its proposal in July, with the sprawling development initially expected to have a capacity of 300MW and potentially expand considerably further.
The withdrawal wasn’t the end of the issue, either. In August, Edgecombe County commissioners voted to introduce a two-year moratorium on new data center developments, giving officials additional time to assess the potential impact of large-scale developments. The decision followed months of community involvement and growing concerns surrounding the demands large-scale data centers can place on local resources.
Encouragingly, the story has now found a second life on social media, where North Carolina residents are celebrating the outcome and pointing to it as an example of what can happen when communities organize around local issues. “This is what happens when people come together,” read the title of the Reddit post, which quickly attracted thousands of upvotes as locals shared their thoughts on the news.
North Carolinians Celebrate a Community Victory
The reaction from North Carolinians was overwhelmingly celebratory, although some warned that the wider fight over data centers may be far from finished. One Reddit user wrote, “Power to the People 🙌,” while another celebrated, “So proud of my fellow Carolinians! Way to go!” Someone else sarcastically added, “But protesting doesn’t work 🙃.”
Others were more cautious about declaring victory just yet. “They’ll fight back, but the public will have to dig in and not give an inch,” one person argued, adding, “The developers are going to have to learn that they just don’t get to do whatever they want with guaranteed success.” Another was more confident, writing, “Edgecombe County passed a data center moratorium. This project is as good as dead.”
Not everyone was convinced, however. One commenter cautioned, “I assure you it’s not completely canceled,” pointing to the concept, engineering, architectural design, and pre-construction work already invested in the proposal before concluding, “it’s not just going to go away.” That skepticism serves as a reminder that while Edgecombe County residents have plenty to celebrate, the broader debate surrounding data center development in North Carolina isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
For many North Carolinians, the Edgecombe County decision has become an encouraging example of what can happen when residents make their voices heard on issues affecting their communities.
