Quentin Tarantino is known for blood, gore, and violence -so it comes as no surprise that the Pulp Fiction director is incorporating it into his Star Trek movie.

While attending Trekkie fan convention Trekonderoga over the weekend, actor Karl Urban shared details of Tarantino’s vision. The 46-year-old New Zealander, who portrays Leonard McCoy in the ‘Abramverse’, teased that Tarantino may have something graphic in mind for the new film.

He explained:

You shouldn’t worry that it is going to be full of obscenity and stuff. He wants an R-rating to really make those beats of consequence land. If it’s not PG, if someone gets sucked out into space, which we have all seen before, we might see them get disemboweled first. To me, that was always one of the things I loved about what [original Doctor McCoy actor] DeForest Kelley did. He would actually capture the horror of space. That look in his eyes of sheer terror always struck me when I was a kid.

‘The horror of space’ has many connotations. Firstly, as Urban explains, there are the graphic implications of it. But then, there’s the thematic potential that the violence could add. More brutal scenes mean deadlier consequences – and that could lead to a more effectively dramatic Star Trek.

Star Trek

Quentin Tarantino is notorious for his aestheticization of violence in films. He has been criticized for his overuse of gore and blood, often using human suffering as a punchline. Since it’s a defining characteristic of his films, it’ll be interesting to see how he handles it in Star Trek.

However, don’t expect to see Chris Pine or Chris Hemsworth reprise their roles in Tarantino’s Star Trek. The pair has recently left the Starship Enterprise due to pay cuts.

Also, don’t expect to see the film anytime soon. Simon Pegg reckons the film will is five or six years away from being released.

What do you think a Tarantino-led Star Trek movie will be like? Let us know in the comments!
