Indiana resident Miserable_Code_2382 likely had a tough time explaining the mysterious hole in her roof to her homeowners insurance company. In her post on r/Roofing, she shared quite the sight: someone or something had torn a hole clean through her roof, through the wood, and possibly into the attic. While hailstorms are a thing in Indiana, the recent light thunderstorm could not have caused such damage, leaving Code quite confused.
“It almost looks like something came out of my roof,” Code wrote in her post. She added that no debris was in the yard or the neighbor’s yard; neither did she hear any loud noises that could have caused the hole. Code requested Reddit for suggestions of the culprit, and plenty of people are confident they know the answer.
Reddit Believes It Knows the Answer to the Mysterious Hole
“99.9%, a raccoon,” read a top comment. “Unauthorized tenants in the Attic,” hinted another. “Raccoon is always the answer. They find the first sign of weakness and go HAM. Then they have their babies in your attic,” remarked a third in agreement.
A few Redditors theorized that it could have been debris from a plane, and while Code says she lives near an international airport, there wasn’t any sign of debris around the property. Excluding determined cave divers, it’s doubtful a person could have squeezed into the hole, leaving Code and her husband to believe a raccoon was the culprit.
After mustering up the courage, Code says she investigated the attic, which turned out to be “clean and empty.” She sighed in relief, “So whatever it is or was is gone and maybe wasn’t there for long.” What wasn’t a relief was the answer she got from her insurance company about coverage for the hole.
“No active tenants to be evicted, and homeowners insurance does not cover animal damage,” she concluded, adding that the repair quotes have been luckily cheaper than her deductible. Still, Reddit users suggest she might want to consider cutting the branches that hang over the roof; otherwise, she might get some more unwanted furry visitors in the future.
